I don’t think society has a problem of “looking these problems in the face”. Quite the opposite; public sentiment *against* mass deployment of AI technology is at an all-time high. People, by and large, *don’t want it* and certainly don’t want the obvious negatives.
The big differences between those other shifts like nuclear and genome editing, is that the most prominent and powerful policy makers **weren’t simultaneously the ones in charge of the technology**.
Elon Musk, a man who *used to be a part of OpenAI and believes AI is already sentient*, had untold amounts of access to our most sensitive information (and probably still does).
They’re passing a bill that makes regulation of AI *prohibited* for 10 years.
The most powerful individuals in the AI community, the CEOs with the most sway and money (Palantir, Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic), are *all* in bed with a criminal organization (whoops, excuse me) *”administration”* who is all but too happy to take their bribery and lobbying in exchange for power without any regard whatsoever with the consequences. On the contrary, this technology is an authoritarian’s *dream*. Not only will they be able to fabricate whatever narrative and evidence they need for any purpose, but they simultaneously get the benefit of being able to hand-wave away incriminating evidence as “AI generated”. Trump has *already* done it, multiple ties.
The video just throws out a bunch of platitudes on how we need to “find a new path” and “face the challenges”, but is completely devoid of ANY even remotely tangible examples of how we’d go about doing it. As far as I’m concerned, the AI coup is complete once this “big beautiful bill” passes.
