Players have hit out at The Alters developer 11 Bit Studios after AI prompts were discovered in both subtitles and flavour text in the game, intimating routine use of large language models (LLMs) without disclosure
I had a weird feeling about some of the dialogue… like it read too sterile? Kinda sucks when devs sneak in gen AI without being upfront, especially from a studio like 11 Bit. Just be real with us next time

> Since January 2024, Valve has required games that use pre- or live-generated AI to divulge this as part of the Steam Distribution Agreement. This includes art, code, sound, and more that have been created with the help of AI tools. At the time of writing, The Alters has made no such disclosure.
> In one example, an in-game screen that’s presumably there to look all sci-fi-y and scientific begins with: “Sure, here’s a revised version focusing purely on scientific and astronomical data”.
>Another commenter who’d played through with subtitles on Brazilian Portuguese noted “several times the subtitles go crazy”, which was later backed up with a screenshot that evidenced it. The subtitle read: “Sure! The text translated to Brazilian Portuguese is: Every conversation two people can have, right? So we-”
>”There has been significant backlash from the Korean gaming community, and it has been really disheartening to witness, especially since the criticism stems from a part of the game I had no control over.”
>At the time of writing, 11 Bit has not publicly addressed the allegations or responded to player comments. Earlier this week, Jurassic Park Evolution 3 removed generative AI for scientists’ portraits in Jurassic World Evolution 3, “following some initial feedback”.

such a shame since the writing of the dialogues in this game is what makes it shine
pls report this issue to valve directly so they can on it!

Being too lazy to crop out multiple prompts is so brain dead it comes back around to being hilarious.

Haha dammit. Of course. All that time and effort but you get lazy a mile from the finish line and take shortcuts

I don’t think I’ve slammed anything other than like, my fist, or a beer.

Damn i really liked this game but this is not only scummy but really lazy. Such a shame, the game’s concept and story is so good, i would hate if a lot of it was Ai
Kulson16
such a stupid title, it was already brought up on the alters subreddit, and everyone was chill with it because it might as well have been lorem ipsum
RunInRunOn
I know it’s the toupee fallacy at work but man, it just feels like everyone who uses gen AI to cut corners is so unbelievably lazy about it

Don’t worry guys, I’m sure they’re passing on the savings of not having to hire a localization team or science consultants onto their customers /s

Always felt weird seeing this game, the first time I saw the cover I thought those people were YouTubers and they were promoting they’re new video.

Ahh shame, I was looking forward to buying the game

Wow. I liked the demo and was thinking about getting it. I don’t care if they use AI, I care they didn’t disclose it and then got caught in the dumbest way.
PsychologicalTea3426
Ok but I see a lot of people that like the game and AI usage only become a problem if you know about it? Then why complain if you like it in the first place

Yeah I’m sorry the random computer screen asset is a gigantic nothingburger and anybody pretending to care about that is just being disingenuous.
Localization is different. That should be disclosed for sure.

It would be funny if there’s actually a bit in the game where the captain is talking to the computer and the computer is answering like this. “Captain’s log, blah blah blah. No, computer, don’t put crew personal details in as addenda.”

On one hand that’s awful that they couldn’t be upfront about it. I don’t know much of the studio, but would hiring an artist be that out of budget? On the other I’m glad it was on gamepass so I can play it knowing I didn’t spend money on it. The story is good, imo. And I enjoy the resource and base management on a, generous, time limit. With those positives I can get past the ai stuff.

I know Reddit hates AI, but this is blown way out of proportion.
If you haven’t played it, it’s random, almost pointless, completely missable background text. It’s literally decoration and has no bearing on the game itself. It’d be like reading the newspaper on someone’s desk during a TV show.
I do think it should be disclosed to players though. They also used ChatGPT for translation.

Edit: [This](https://imgur.com/a/7PrUoH8) is what it looks like normally lmao.
Lmao people are butthurt about devs taking a shortcut to skip time in a game about taking shortcuts to skip time.
Just go to the Bungie book of excuses, “It was one employee who did all the bad things and they no longer work for us.”
“fans” sure.
Why do gamers get upset about AI? It’s literally creeping into every industry.
Cool, I’ll have to check it out.
