I agree, it’s a great line. And it’s more broadly applicable to everyone, as the way the world “is” is entirely dependent on our own perceptions. Nothing has inherent meaning or value until we project those things into existence, and those things are different for everyone. Idk, I like thinking about it and I feel like it’s relevant to James’ journey.

I think part of the thinking behind is that, there is often a reason for those imaginings. The mind protects itself with these delusions from harm that would otherwise crush it.
If the weight of the reality is so destructive that the patient’s mind would effectivily implode, then dragging him into it is not only pointless but destructive.
I’m not a psychologist, even less so a psychiatrist, so please don’t take this as anything but random thoughts here, but I would imagine that, when dealing with people with deep delusions and mental issues, you cannot just drag them out of it. You need to actually prepare a reality that they can live with first. You need to heal the wounds or strengthen the mind in other ways. Through a very long process, you might prepare them to face that reality, and find something better in it.
But some unrealities might just be better off left unreal. Maybe one could argue coexisting reality with delusions is the only livable option in an extreme trauma. What do I know.
As far as the game itself goes, James (MAJOR SPOILERS) >!fooled himself into thinking he didn’t kill Mary, but the entire journey this forces upon him as a result is an opportunity for him to find a way to live with it. In the moment he would have broken and perhaps killed himself, but through his delusions gives himself time to process it.!<
Anyway, love this game, I start thinking way too much about stuff when I play Silent Hill, it just hits me so differently than other games.

It is a great line, and good consideration, and (but?) Persona 5 Royal also gives a possible answer to it.
