Jagex, founders of Runescape, calls for a progressive removal of aggressive MTX from Runescape 3.

This seems like uplifting news, but MTX is a core aspect of RS3 and a big money driver so I’m Interested how this affects OSRS (their best, and one of the best games ever made).

It’s a step in the right direction, but idk how they save RS3 when it’s so ingrained in the game. Needs to be a massive overhaul.

Im curious how they mitigate the advantage that players who abused MTX for the past 10+ years have. Step in the right direction none-the-less.

Solving the old problem today allows for growth tomorrow. It’s sad that it took this long, but It’s the right thing if RS3 wants to start the process of turning things around.

Don’t care anymore, I’m playing Bitcraft Online.

They’ve ruined the game for *nearly 15 years* with aggressive microtransactions.

Now they’re going to save the game? Slightly late on this decision….

The only people left on RS3 are whales who rely on these to play the game, or irons who completely abstain anyways.

Everyone else completely quit RS or moved to osrs.

So they can double the microtransactions in RuneScape 4!

What I need is to be able to pay for membership by the day. I cant play all month, I have a kid now. I dont want to spend $20 a month and play maybe 3hrs a week.

Unfortunately, once the micro transactions are introduced to a game like RuneScape, there’s no going back. The moment individuals can pay real life money to gain an edge over players who can’t or won’t, the competitive nature and competitive thrill of the game dies. Microtransactions should NEVER EVER go beyond strictly cosmetic items in ANY competitive game, ever.

“We have decided to stop fucking you as hard. Please praise us.”

Problem is the player base is so small that the only way for RC3 to make money is these aggressive MTX. I remember watching a video about this.

And this people in OSRS don’t have to worry about this because,

1 – this population is so fucking large and making bank with subscriptions and other…lighter MTX that there isn’t a need

2 – The developers know if they put in aggressive MTX in OSRS players will just leave and make their own private servers

  11. MTX will soon be reintroduced when jagex makes a new counterfeit rare hat and puts it in the mtx wheel soon enough. It works on getting whole playerbase to spend on MTX everytime.

  12. Can confirm the aggressive MTX(s) drove me away when I tried RS3. The other factor was that the world felt like a carnival with random structures and events and landmarks every 5 feet – too crowded and nothing felt connected or related.

  13. Practical-Aside890

Didn’t watch the video. But is rs3 free or does it have the same f2p/membership model like osrs?

If it’s completely f2p they either need mtx or the membership model imo to make it work but honestly I don’t know. To me it seems you need one or the other for the type of games they do unless it was price tag on it 40$ or something to play like a normal video game.

The only way I see this work is if they made a new “Wipe” where the economy hasnt been affected by the MTX. A few worlds that have seperate leveling and economy that get updated alongside normal rs3.

  15. People outside the loop of runescape and osrs. This is too little too late. Rs3 is practically dead, they’ve milked it to a pulp. Even the whales have had enough, the game became so incredibly and grossly pay to win that it has effectively died. OSRS on the other hand is one of if not the most successful MMO of all time. The issue was that no matter how much people complained the overwhelming majority of developers time went into more MTX nonsense as opposed to content updates, etc.

I quit in RS2 days due to the rising number of mtx and gatcha mechanics, I hear it’s only gotten worse.

  17. PhasmaFelis

TIL that Jagex stands for “Java Game Experts.”

I guess they don’t use that much these days.

  18. I feel bad for runescape players. All this video said is you’re being metric farmed to prove that pushing cosmetics will be the future (where as buffs and boosts can be replaced) and where they pour more time into and even potentially create a larger team for it.

At least be up front with that lol.

  19. As a RS3 Ironman, I love the idea of RS3 removing MTX and am all for it- but overall I’m not sure it will attract a ton of new/returning players given how “far ahead” current MTX players are/have been for 15 years(!).

IMO, making something like a fresh start world with zero MTX and zero cosmetics would go crazy. People want the natural RS3 experience without being forced into Ironman (let me tradeee). Just think of how fresh start servers explode on other MMOs.

If you didn’t want to segment players into separate worlds/servers, allow new (maybe even existing) characters who have never used MTX to earn special capes/titles/pets or some kind of exclusive reward. Give them like a custom symbol in name/chat similar to how Ironmans have it.

I’d like to play rs. But yeah the mtx made me not bother. It’s so in your face everytime I log in. Also. It’s way too annoying to find out what to do. No in game pointers where to go for what. You just google “how to level x”

Idk why people even have main accounts on this game outside of having a 15-20 year old account. Ironman/ Group ironman make the game better. No micro transactions, and its still easier/less time consuming to max than an osrs main.
