For reasons not connected to the PTM7950 application I put on a couple of months ago *cough*asusfkndesigntwats*cough* I needed to demount the cooler on my video card. Having recently applied PTM7950 I was interested to note that about 99% of what I'd applied had squeezed out of the interface, leaving a very pleasing and highly performant super thin layer.

When sizing this initial application, I cut the pad so it had about 1mm of overhang on all sides (trying to ensure no hotspots on the edges and corners of a bare die GPU).

For today's application, I cut the pad smaller giving about 1mm of exposed silicon around each edge. Testing so far shows no real difference. I'm not inclined to break the seal and see what it looks like so I'm hoping everything is A-OK under there.

For those that undersize their PTM, how small do you go?

    I did mine exactly the same size as the die, temps are insanely good so I won’t dare to fiddle with it unless necessary.

    I have a 4080 strix and the temps were always shit on it, 75+ on the core and 100+ hot spot, opened it up and literally all the paste was pumped out on the edges.

    I used a thermal grizzly phase pad, the stuff is absolutely magic.. gpu doesn’t even exceed 50c anymore, it’s pure bliss. So I can definately relate to your F Asus comment. They use cheap thermal paste that pumps out in a short time, and your $2000 gpu then sounds like a hair dryer and acts like a space heater.

    Even if the ptm did pump out it couldnt be half as worse as this crap.
