Sony Is Considering Acquiring Warner Bros Streaming And Gaming Assets (DC, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, Mortal Kombat, etc)

Earlier this month, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it would split itself into two entities by mid-2026. The first one, WBD Global Networks, will remain focused on the company’s traditional cable programming with sports, news, and entertainment; the second entity, WBD Streaming and Studios, will spin off with HBO, the TV series and movie production, as well as the gaming division of Warner Bros. Discovery. Sony is allegedly interested in acquiring the second entity
Sony is already deep into Movies, TV, Anime, Manga and seem to want to start thier own streaming service. They wanted Kadokawa (Fromsoftware parent company) for the same reasons to strengthen multiple branches of thier multimedia business: Movies/TV/Anime/Gaming/Manga/Music. This would give them both Marvel and DC as exclusives in gaming, and the rights to both Spiderman and Batman movies. They are also invested in fighting games owning EVO, putting out thier own fightstick, and making a new Marvel fighting game (Marvel Tokon). So Mortal Kombat and DC roster would also be big for them.
I suppose it will be cheaper after a split, but can Sony even afford it?
I can guarantee you every company with enough money is considering this. These companies always have a list of potential targets, doesn’t mean anything comes from it. Remember the activision trial? A huge list of pubs and studios were listed that xbox was considering buying and the pros/cons to doing it.
Consolidation in the video game industry is getting out of hand… Soon there will be no third parties left and we’ll just have Sony / Microsoft / Nintendo games and indies.
Would that mean insomniac could make a Batman game?
This would be good, because Warner Bros have basically checked out of the gaming market and the LOTR Shadow games need some love and the nemesis system needs to come back.
But, it would be more ideal if it weren’t either Sony or Microsoft buying them.

If it’s being reported already it’s almost already close to being finalized unless something insane happens. Opportunities like this aren’t left in the air for that long before someone comes and takes it. Lots of money to be made
You know what? Fuck it. I want them to do it. Warner Bros Gaming are grossly incompetent, and I want to see what Sony can do with Batman Arkham and Game of Thrones.
Not sure Sony can afford buy DC or Harry Potter and WB aren’t likely to give them up. This will just be gaming assets, not rights to entire franchises (especially ones that generate as much as Harry Potter). If anything WB is more likely just to splitting parts up of their gaming divisions, so selling smaller parts is easier.
However, this rumour was around last time WB were looking to sell up their gaming side, Amazon and Disney would be interested as well for sure and Sony isn’t outbidden them.
A Sony LotR game would be dope.
I am usually against shit like this happening, but someone really really needs to get this away from David Zaslav. The guy is running everything into the ground. Treats everything like Discovery TV reality nonsense.

Warner had all these deep and endless IPs and we never got any Discovery Network based games. I wanted a … 90 Day Fiance dating sim or a 600lb Life Survivors or a Halloween Wars/Overcooked crossover or a Naked Attraction point and click adventure or an Iron Chef platform fighter … Damn shame.
Most of these assets would print money.
Mortal Kombat might see a revival if Sony can tone down the micro transactions.

Those IP’s aren’t going anywhere. If the Studios came with the DC stuff they would have been purchased a long time ago. That is why Microsoft and Tencent never bought them.
