Was messing around with Reddit data on gaming mouse. Thought I’d share the results.

Its part of one of my projects to tinker with Reddit data and LLMs. Wanted to create something useful for the community while levelling up my coding chops.

The idea is to highlight which gaming mouse got the most love. To be clear, most love =/= best. But hopefully its a useful data point nonetheless, especially for those overwhelmed by info.

I actually posted a version of this ~6 months ago. A lot of the issues that the previous one had should be fixed (limited to models on Amazon, erroneous model attribution, duplications). Lemme know what you think!

Obviously this is a very general list. It does gets more interesting when you slice and dice the data. The 2nd and 3rd images are filtered for comments about FPS and MMO respectively.

If you want to explore the data and filter more stuff (price, subreddits, comments about topics e.g. FPS, MMO, small hands, big hands, durability), you can do so at RedditRecs (dot) com (or google “RedditRecs”).

Methodology in the comments.

  1. Methodology:

Data collection: I wrote a script that uses Google and Reddit search to search keywords like “best gaming mouse”, filtered for the past year, sorted by relevance. I used LLMs to analyze each search result, extracting reviews from the comments and performing sentiment analysis. I kept going until the relevant results analyzed dropped below 40% of all the results analyzed so far. A total of 416 relevant threads and 4,089 users were analyzed.

Scoring: Each user contributes *up to* 1 “vote” per model, regardless of no. of comments on it.

Handling vague references: If a user does not specify the *exact* model (e.g. g502 could refer to g502 X lightspeed or g502 hero), their vote are still included. However, their 1 vote is “spread out” among the possible models. More popular models are given more weight (because the chance that those are the models being referred to is higher).

Ranking: I calculated the normalized positive sentiment score and normalized positive:negative ratio, and used that to determine the final score for ranking (weighted 75%-25%).

Caveat: Handling and merging different model namings, brands, abbreviations etc is non trivial so a 100% LLM approach wasn’t sufficient. I did some eyeballing and manual clean up but there may still be mistakes. Let me know if anything seems wrong or surprising!

My 2 cents. I think theres a lot of mice below 50 that are good enough for most people’s gaming.

Once you hit $100 there are so many good options it doesn’t really make sense to go for a branded one.

Ten years ago, the mouse market was ridiculously small.

  3. Really sad to not see a single Zowie 🙁

Have been with Logitech my entire life and now I have the zowie FK2-C since 4 years and I’m not going back.

Everything is absolutely perfect for me, the shape, the clicking, the sliding, the weight, the button layout and placement, the buttons resistance. It’s a complete home run. It’s the first time I have absolutely 0 comment on it, while with Logitech I always had a “ok this is perfect I just wished this or that element was slightly different”

But mouse is also very subjective, so I’m not claiming Zowie is universally better than Logitech, it just is for me.

  4. _Dedotated_Wam

Do g600s really go for that price? I have one collecting dust.

  5. AshuraBaron

Love my G600. Fits my hand, has weight and the many side buttons make playing with just one hand so easy.

  6. ubuntu_ninja

    Razer DeathAdder V2 owner here.

Couldn’t ask better than that – I’m in love with it 🙂

  7. Common_Height_6229

I wonder how the G Pro clones (combined) would fit this list. I have a Kysona M600 and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. And it was waaaaay cheaper than a G Pro.

  8. LockedUnlocked

Don’t know if this graph included any Counter-Strike players. Not seeing Zowie on the FPS list when they’ve been the king of CS mice for over a decade (quite literally every pro uses it) it has deep roots in the CS community.

  9. Commercial_Ad_2832

I love my mouse and it’s not in there!

    Stay strong, Roccat Kone

  10. Accomplished_Tip3597

as somebody that has multiple G305 i can definitely confirm that list

  11. mavven2882

The first issue here is relying on Reddit users.

  12. NoMeaningLeft

Been in love with my superlight since I got it in 2021. Still works fairly well except a few scroll wheel issues here and there. I think I’ll get a new one if there’s a good sale around black friday

  13. Llamaalarmallama

    Missing the GOAT imo.

    Have had:
    Intellimouse v3
    Razer Habu
    Razer Lachesis
    Random weird cheap one
    Logitech MX600
    Other weird cheap one
    Steelseries Wow mouse 1 & 2.
    Logitech G700, G700s, G700s (previous GOAT imo)
    Logitech G502’s (a good few)

    Roccat Kone XP

Roccat Kone XP is THE absolute greatest mouse that’s ever existed. It’s Roccat’s “Swan Song”. The last mouse made under their brand before Turtle Beach fully absorbed them and the Roccat branding pretty much disappeared. It’s absolutely the best thing ever created as a mouse. Even the “gimmicky” thumb “shift switch” is perfectly placed/balanced to double up keys available. Uses optical switches so there’s none of the “logitech/omron microswitch plate inside fades with time” issues.

The G502 is a VERY VERY good mouse. The Kone XP is absolutely better in every meaningful way. Still exists, now under turtle beach branding. TB absolutely suck donkey balls, I’d buy a TB branded one if either of the Kone XP’s I have died. It’s light, a TINY bit wider than the G502, similar weight/size/shape otherwise.

It being Roccat, I think most folks missed it. They had typical German levels of good engineering, their software was terrible. TB coming in sorted the software. If they haven’t messed with/cheapened the internals, still utterly peerless imo.

  14. NightLasher617

Is it worth upgrading from a g305 to a pro x superlight?

  15. ADankPineapple

G502 showing up 5 individual times on the overall chart warms my heart

  16. LazyDawge

There’s probably cheaper alternatives but in my biased opinion the Superlight really deserves that spot. It’s so well balanced compared to other wireless mice I’ve tried. Stupid long battery life. Nice weight. Surprisingly durable against accidental drops from the desk.

If you’re going wired Zowie is great though. Don’t understand why people are still scared of wireless though.

  17. Dbz-Styles

Moved from a Deathadder to a Naga V2 pro, I use just the six button panel I am not mentally prepared for the 12 button yet.

    I exclusively play MMO’s.

  18. UltiMikee

Crazy that the third most rec’d mouse is simply out of production and Logitech refuses to bring it back lmao

  19. Murderface-04

    I have 2 and 9!

    Wouldn’t recommend anything else tbh.

  20. OlympicSmokeRings

Can c9nfirm Logitech 502 is nice. And wal mart has em for 40 sometimes

  21. SvennEthir

G600 is the best mouse and I don’t know how I’ll ever use another mouse again. I bought 4 to keep extras in case one dies since they stopped making them.

  22. The GPX just works. Terrible Terrible side buttons, though.

  23. Interesting-Eye-1615

Mine isn’t even there and I think it’s the best mouse ever (I’m no expert on it so take my experience as subjective) Logitech G903

  24. Lol here I am with my Glorious stuff like :O reddit talks about glorious no?

  25. LostMyControl

this only goes of off likes not likes to dislike ratio

  26. christianlewds

Holy moly, I did not expect Logitech to dominate this much. I got Corsair Scimitar Elite and it’s nothing but problems. Failing scrollwheels, failing mouse buttons, dogshit quality – I’m on warranty claim no. 6 now btw.

Can Logitech restart their MMO mouse, please, I’ll switch in a heartbeat. 🙁

  27. this is why you shouldn’t take reddit recommendations

  28. I do like my Pro X Superlight, and with charge pad, I like that it never needs to get plugged in. I had been a loooooong time Razor and specifically Deathadder user. I’ve tried a couple other really popular ones in the past and never really liked them. The Pro X Superlight is the first one that I’ve actually enjoyed over the Deathadder.

  29. Kirk_Plunk

Spent all my money on a gpu and then spent 50 quid on a mouse and keyboard lol

  30. Strude187

I have a 305, cheap, does the job. No idea why people spend lots of money on a mouse when their function is basic and you can buy a “perfect” mouse for £30.

  31. Tricky-Background600

Logitech G703 for 5 years now.
    Still great

  32. SadClassroom4175

I have a Viper V3 Pro that’s I got maybe 5 months ago and it’s now my favorite mouse. Super comfortable with bigger hands and you can palm or claw grip it easily. Also going from an older heavier mouse made this one feel empty.

  33. Smear_Leader

You can see the guerrilla marketing that worked

  34. The MMO section is just full of awful mice. I tried half of them and they were quite disappointing for various reasons: weight, form, bad buttons. I strongly recommend Aerox 9 if you need more buttons, it’s also so light you can use it as a daily driver without a problem.

  35. WolfeJib69

Come down the rabbit hole with us at r/mousereview

  36. Firm_Transportation3

Love my G305. Not expensive at all but works like a charm, seems well built, and even has a few extra buttons on the side. Great budget gaming mouse if you don’t need 12 side buttons and rgb lights etc. I see no reason to pay more than the $30 ish this one costs as it’s all I need in a gaming mouse at a fraction of the cost of some.
