Not at all. His gonkyness aggravates me to the point he’s on the short list of NPCs it won’t let me kill but wish I could. He’s right behind Dexter, Dexter’s bitch, and Wakako.
When I was playing Cyberpunk for the first time back in the day, this is what I was expecting from River Ward to be like on the top of my head. A gritty cyber-noir legend trench coat, stubble, haunted past, morally grey with “I can fix him” scribbled all over.
But instead we got a guy who dresses with a weird fashion sense that is more of an pimp than a cop, flirts very awkwardly,( although to be fair, it happens to the best of us and not creepy. But it’s freaking weird.) and has a very peculiar face, its looks uncanny and resonates NPC energy instead of an memorable part of the game. He’s also very underdeveloped as a character which is unfortunate.

I feel I’m the only one that *does* really like River’s design lmao. Like the coat is ugly sure – it’s cumbersome and impractical [positive] a heavy textured and waterlogged weight on him like a yoke on a workhorse. It’s also evocative of a detective duster without looking to “noiry” – I know I’m gonna be almost entirely alone dying on the trash hill but I think the suede and leather and fur textures suit him a lot better than if he was heaving out of a cop uniform or noir pinstripes or a bloody zootsuit or anything like that – and they also serve as a better contrast to his cold inorganic cyberwear. He is afterall reconciling with himself throughout the texts we get in game – his place in a cold unyielding inorganic system [ncpd] vs his desire to reconnect to his Native American heritage and the contrast of metal and fur and hide are a little visual reinforcement of that tension. I don’t know anything about the Pomo tribe – neither does River, tbh and that’s why he’s glum – but Dakota is the eldest Pomo member in the area and we can’t help connect them and that’s a shame. All this from a big grubby hairy coat – I can conjure a banquet from crumbs. Also not got the energy to over intellectualize anything else but do also wanna point out him tall, surly, the haggard robot eye and his razorburny throat is hot fight me everyone’s wrong about River – surely it’s literally all of you and not me.
