I have so many games I’ve gotten for free or in a bundle I’ve never touched. I imagine that’s a decent portion.

When i see it said online, its them lamenting that they dont have the time to play and/or they feel foolish for buying a game they will never get to enjoy.
I see it as less of a flex, and more the truth about becoming an adult. (you have more money, but no time)

Bro just don’t buy games until you want to play them, you’re burning money for no reason when steam does sales like 4 times a year
We’re not really flexing. More so admitting to a terrible addiction to the dopamine of buying something you want but then being forced into choice paralysis due to the insane backlog we’ve built over the years.
It’s something every steam user does and is relatable….thus making it an easy karma farming post. I don’t think every OP is aware of how often it’s posted. Just like you aren’t aware of how many previous posts have been made asking your same exact question.
Humble bundle and deep discounts. I have over 500 games, tons of which I’ll never play just because it was in a bundle that was cheaper for the game I actually wanted.
Because we can get games for next to nothing. Heck with epic we can get many games for nothing
I’ve never seen it as a flex, and more like a humorous bit of self-recrimination about being suckered by fomo, poor time management, and a reflection of how we need to allocate our time as adults.

In my case I decided I wanted to own every StarWars game available and bought up every one the steam store offered.
Haven’t gotten around to all of them yet. Maybe never will 🤷
But I have the option.
Usually because I buy a bundle on discount and work too much to get to them. Eventually I get there though specially now that most new games are garbage

It’s normally a running gag that Steam users mention when the seasonal Steam sales are happening. It’s a way to poke fun at the fact they are buying games, yet they already have games they haven’t played in their library.
Some use it as a way to explain being a patient gamer. They don’t see the point in buying new releases until they finish their current backlog. Then, by the time they finish their current games, the new release will be on sale when they are ready to buy it.
Like a lot of other people have already said, a lot of it boils down to having more money and less time.
The other thing that tends to cause this (for me at least) is buying “bundles” that come with multiple games, many of which are shovelware inclusions for the illusion of adding value.
The majority of the games I did buy were from humble bundle when I didn’t play them.
Nobody tell OP about self-deprecating humour.
Is it purchase or redeem? Because as a steam user, the free games I’ve collected over the years super shadows the few I’ve purchased. Same with epic…I don’t even remember buying a game with them but I have hundreds now.
It can only reasonably be seen as a cry for help.
It started as a Meme during the peak of Humble Bundle and Steam Sales, where we were getting AA or AAA games for like a dollar.
The high availability of super cheap or even free games led to people making memes about their backlog, which turned into “Summer Sale? Time to buy more games I’ll never get around to playing.”

This thread is teaching me that a lot of the kids have never heard of humble bundle.
The discount “-(discount)%” on games just “neuron activates” me. The only reason I don’t play the games I buy on steam is because it’s not piling up taking up physical space like buying physical games would so I just forget about what I was excited for and play the same 3-5 games.
But it was $2!

Man I got shit to do. A career, a family and all that. If I bought the game it can be 20 years old, ima play it at some point. I just can’t sit around gaming all day like I used to, but them steam sales be hittin sometimes…
Just yesterday I bought doom eternal again. You don’t have to make me feel bad again.
It’s not a flex, it’s a problem. I will buy games I know I won’t play like Persona 5 just to have them in my library. It’s so far from a flex.
It’s not really a flex, it’s more a self deprecating joke. I’m fully aware that I am bad at self control when it comes to games purchases. I have 1500+ games in my backlog, I know it’s a problem. I just like that dopamine hit I get when I buy something with a green sticker on it and I forget about it by the next day.
I have a massive library because of humble bundle epic weekly free games, xbox game pass, and prime gaming rewards. (And the occasional insane 80% markdown bundles on steam when they pop up on something I like).
Nice thing about the indie games that come up on these sales often is they take no hardrive space and nothing to run i can remote play from my phone a lot which is awesome, especially with turn based ones since lag doesnt matter at all for that.
I share my account with my nephews, my friends share with their kids.
Having a ton of games makes it super fun for kids. Worlds at their fingertips. I dont think its something to brag about though. I just like knowing theres always something new waiting for me.
