Is this true?

Not familiar enough with how Windows’ scheduler works, but it’s possible. This is the same dilemma as with the 7800x3d vs 7950x3d argument. The latter had more cores, but the former had 3D caches on all the cores so was generally considered better for gaming.

Yup, always use balanced when it comes to dual ccd chips, especially x3d chips. Just let the core parking do its thing.

  3. ScaryDuck2

I have no idea about what any of this means but I was told also that 9800x3d CPUs also preferred balanced rather than max performance. So wrong?

  4. unnamed_one1

Not sure if it’s true, as I don’t own any of these CPUs, but the explanation makes total sense.

  5. Brawndo_or_Water

yup. And i also have 2 rigs with 9800X3D beside my 9950X3D workstation. It’s a different animal. That is why I always recommend the 9800X3D to newcomers.

I always just leave it to “Balanced” lmao. “Prefer Maximum Performance” is hardly helpful in nearly any cases and would just heat up your computer faster because as he said, it forces the frequencies to max out all the time.

Am i safe to set the 9800X3D to maximum performance?

Alternatively, use software like Process Lasso to ensure applications have correct CPU affinities. The downside is that it requires a little bit of manual setup, but on the upside you will no longer have to worry about whether or not it is being done correctly.

I just changed the CPPC from Auto to Cache. (9950x3d owner) it just works.

Does this apply to 12th, 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs too cause of the pcore and ecore business?

  11. itszesty0

I imagine he knows what hes talking about but yeah. 3D vcache is pretty new so makes sense.

  12. SlowTour

you haven’t needed to run performance mode for years.

These non-standard, different core (big/little, different amounts of cache etc) are just adding to the scheduler chaos. Both Intel and AMD seem to have moved to these architectures to boost benchmark numbers, despite the absolute nightmare this causes for scheduling.

This will likely be a blip in the CPU development lifecycle, and when we get back to proper, consistent CPU cores – all this time spent on development and what are basically ‘workarounds’ will have been wasted.

I’m running a server (VPS) on Windows using the 7950X3D. Does this also apply to that?

  15. WolvenSpectre2

This is the 5th or 6th time I have heard this and it makes sense, so yeah, I’d believe it.

Tbh use balanced anyway for any other cpus, windows is very smart and will boost clock speed efficiently everytime ur game needs it and reduce it during idle or office work, also applies for gpus aswell

  18. Acojonancio

Windows has Power Option that says “AMD Ryzen Balanced”, i suppose that is what you want to use in general.

  19. EbonShadow

I wonder if this applies to Linux too.

Jay’s been really trying to up his game with verifiable facts lately. Tech-Jesus has had a great influence on his team.

  21. I couldn’t catch it because of the speed, but did he say except for the 9800x3d ?

  22. seniorfrito

Ok so anyone that’s just running an X should do what? Still run in High Performance? Because that’s what the elders always told us years ago. Hell all the most unoptimized game “Fix” tutorials, everyone always said run at high performance, run it as Administrator, increase your shader cache, etc. So that’s literally what I’ve been going on for years. Was this bad advice?

  23. shredmasterJ

Yea. Same with Intel. U want to use balance. The scheduler works better with the E/P cores.

  24. Lolle9999

I dunno if this works or not for Amd but on Intels latest chips you can process lasso all non game programs to the e cores like i did.

I hope you can do this atm or in the future on amd too.

Its one thingaking them run on the different cores but i dunno how it works with ccd’s etc or if there would be some conflict.

This way a x950x3d would great at putting other tasks on the non 3d cores.

I doubt that if you have two different situations where you would get the same game performance, examples below.

Example 1: here you have a game running and nothing else and thus the cores of the x950x3d automatically turn off/park the non 3d cores and run the game + Windows on said active cores

Example 2: here you have a game running AND discord + Chrome but both Chrome and discord are process lassoed to the non 3d cores and the game to only the 3d cores.

Would said game have the same performance on both these setups? Like they would on intel if you ran Chrome and discord on the E cores?

If yes then it would be great with the x950x3d cpus since they would essentially mimic E cores but be a lot faster

This ignores extra heat generated as a factor along with anything else like gpu bottlenecks etc and is in a pure vacuum.

Sorry to ask but what about older ones like the 5700x3d? Should I also use balanced mode?
