Although Mortal Kombat 1 may be done receiving new content, fans have a new movie to look forward to this year.

We’ve yet to really see anything out of Mortal Kombat 2 besides stills of new characters like Shao Kahn and Jonny Cage, but that should be changing somewhat soon — and those who’ve gotten to see the film early are apparently quite enjoying it.

Mortal Kombat 2 Producer Todd Garner recently teased what appears to be the release window for the movie’s first trailer.

According to the post, we should expect the trailer to drop in July, which is still a little ways away.

Unsurprisingly, MK2 is rated R though it’s hard to read the rating details from the image.

Screenwriter Jeremy Slater also spoke to Comic Book about the reception to early test screenings for the movie and their goals with the tournament setting this time around.

“I have been to those test screenings, which are full of Mortal Kombat fans, and watching them react to it the way I reacted to Avengers: Endgame,” said Slater via CB. “They were cheering and jumping out of their seats. Every joke is landing and they are loving it. It’s one of the greatest moments of my life. That’s why you get into this business.”

“It was finding a structure to make the tournament as satisfying as you want it to be because this had years of build-up.”

“It’s figuring out who the individual matches are going to be, which characters do you pair off for maximum emotional impact, but also for the most dynamic fights. Then, also, what is the larger story you are telling between the tournament?”

“Then, making sure when you get to those moments that matter — the fights, the fatalities, the surprises, the deaths — that they land and they are as satisfying as everyone wants them to be. I think we nailed it. They had the best stunt team in the business working on this thing. The actors are phenomenal. It’s so much funnier and bigger than the first movie.”

Unlike the first movie, it sounds like Mortal Kombat 2 is going to focus on the titular tournament with the writer not wanting to make fans wait any longer for the main event.

On top of the returning cast, Mortal Kombat 2 brings in a slew of new characters from the fighting game series including Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Quan Chi (Damon Herriman), Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), and Baraka (CJ Bloomfield).

Fans also have more to look forward to this year with the recent announcement of the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection.

Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
