My buddy has 3 cats and smokes weed at his desk. He started complaining about poor performance and loud fan noise about 6 months ago. I told him he should open it up and he just said “Naw its fine I blow the vents out with duster.” Pointed out that in a closed space like a laptop that’ll just push crap further into sensitive spots

Fans can go from coolers to insulators.

Was this set down on a blanket or carpet, or couch? Or has this just never been cleaned out?

Once a week, lol, maybe if that week has 730 days in it 😄

Yeah I’m calling bullshit on “once a week” cleanings…
Either you’re lying this was cleaned last week or you have an incredibly filthy place and just place your laptop on the dust patch left from previous weeks “cleaning.”

It’s dusty.. that’s what’s going on. Quit using canned air…

As a tech at a break and fix… I see fans like this ALL the time. I mean ALLL the time. And if I smell third hand smoke, I’m expecting to find a shag carpet for a fan in their computer.

I took apart my nephew’s “screaming” laptop one time, and there was a quarter-inch thick, rectangular *pad* of dust, cat hair, etc. that I was able to peel off of the inside of the ventilation. Satisfying and disgusting. Thoroughly dusted, brushed, repasted, new thermal pads. Worked great after that, gamed well, etc. I fished out some K’nex tires from the building block box, and taped them to the back corners to raise the intake vents off the desk (broken screen, was only going to be used as a desktop).
I’m sure it’s a mess again – been a couple years at least since we did that.
We need to do a desktop build party or something for that kid…
*Edit: Forgot to mention, I did have to swap out the fan in that laptop, too.*

“I clean it once a week with a duster”
I sure hope you don’t mean compressed air. Which kills PC fans and causes exactly this problem.

A pc in the branch office just died and i got asked to check on it.
I told them to sent it to nearby fixer and as i called the fixer to ask what happen to it
“The pc ventilation is fully clogged and overheats.”
Ah, these people never bothered to clean it for years.

Should try vacuuming your place 2 times a week
MrMakerHasLigma
cleaning it once a week is different depending on if you’re a tech guy or not. To a tech guy, yes it would mean removing the dust. To a regular person, thats just getting rid of all the dirt on the surface of the laptop

I still think this is why the MacBook Air is the superior laptop for the average person. Not having fans is such a huge benefit of that design. Yes of course it doesn’t provide optimal performance and it does get warm but it certainly makes it a very reliable device.

And that “once a week” was a damn lie.
Bet that laptop owner only uses it on Sundays too.
