I was just here thinking if there’s really any downside to including the option for first/third person in games. For example, if Elden Ring gave you the option for first person mode (They kind of do with Bows and it is fun) would it make the game any worse? If Doom Eternal or Far Cry 3 had the option for third person, would it negatively affect the game? I’m sure the reason that most games don’t offer the option is because it would be a ton of extra work and/or probably more importantly, it’s just not the vision they have for that game but I am curious from a development standpoint how much extra work that is exactly if anyone has an idea. What do you guys think?

Depending on the physics engine it can change things, in some fps/tps games what you can and can’t hit changes depending on what view you’re in. Bad example but in Skyrim you can shoot around corners in third person but not in first person
Look at your characters shadow in cyberpunk thats what itd look like in third person
Elden Ring would not work as intended in first person. Souls games are completely designed around third person cameras. There’s a first person mod and it looks amazing for screenshots and walking videos but the gameplay isn’t remotely the same.
Even in tainted grail, the third person mode is incredibly jank
I friggin love Tainted Grail man, it’s what I wish avowed would’ve been
Worth saying the devs have said that whilst 3rd person is available, the game is designed for 1st person and some of the animations might not look great in 3rd.
You’re welcome 🙂 Have fun in my game
Third person helps with motion sickness. So I’m always all for that option.
Can someone tell me if this game is more Oblivion or more King’s Field?
The video I saw I got King’s Field vibes.
It’s because the game so strongly pulls from the elder scrolls games.
If done right sure, if we’re going to get a mediocre third and first person I much rather have only one but of a decent quality
I’m already hooked on this game. I never heard of it until yesterday.
Yooo…. I wasn’t gonna get this because the trailer only showed first person footage. Thanks YOU for posting this
Especially with games where there is any platforming, forcing you to do that in first person is just kind of mean. I can’t see my feet, how would I know I’m jumping to the next platform correctly?
Some games just don’t work in the first person and others just don’t work in the third person. Like a mechanic that works or looks good in your third-person game probably wouldn’t work in the first-person game. Not to mention that the devs would have to program twice the animations.
Its hard to do both because you are basically building two different systems.
From the perspective of someone who watches their partner playing games a lot, I like seeing when there’s a person because it’s easier for me to follow what’s going on. Also, the first-person view of looking down from heights makes me nauseous sometimes!
