The cartoon sex scenes would of been funny as hell.

> Baldur’s Gate 3 lead character artist and current Larian Studios Art Director Alena Dubrovina explained that the studio went through numerous art styles before resting on the game’s final look. In fact, at one point, the game was supposed to be much more “cartoony” in nature.
>Dubrovina explained that Larian went through numerous changes for the game’s art style. These weren’t just minor tweaks in aestetic, but the team tore the game’s visuals down and started from scratch a number of times before resting on the style we know today.

And I wish they did. Realism is boring and artistically empty.
LazyPainterCat
Glad they didnt.
JHMfield
Yeah, I think a more realistic look is ultimately the better choice for a game with that kind of a budget and theme.
If you’re going for super high graphical fidelity and mo-cap work, stylization is just going to look awkward I think.

I’m glad they went with the more realistic art direction lol, but if cartoon-ish design would allow more time for more content to be developed than I’d definitely be up for it.
Alenonimo
The current style is pretty good, but given how Larian did everything so far, even if it was a cartoonish style, it would also have been good.
GGG100
It was the right choice. BG3’s AAA-quality presentation is one of the reasons why it attracted so many players who otherwise wouldn’t have touched a CRPG.
Pkittens
I’m gonna doubt that pretty hard, since BG3 looks almost indistinguishable from their previous game DOS2. There’s so much tooling and re-use between these two games, there’s no way this consideration went beyond “what if cartoons” and “no”.
FreshestFlyest
Personally I’d love it
Necessary_Tank_9730
I have a feeling that even if they did, the game would be fantastic again and it would be charming even with the cartoony style. Larian makes great games.
suzumushibrain
That’s called DA Veilguard
slightly_drifting
What did the designs look like? I just got ad bombed on that page and backed out.
SharpEdgeSoda
I imagine they meant more like “Fortnite” and “Overwatch.”
Relatively human proportions but clean colors and big expressive eyes and the occasional bombastically large dude. You can’t deny that style is what’s “Trendy” right now, even if we are getting sick of it.
I’m thinking how they’d make Halsin built like Zangief or something. Bear man.
Arqium
The current style is very nice. I think they should have worked mored on lightning and atmosferics, color.
It seems a bit to much bland.
LagoriBronzeMedalist
Tbh they should do it with spinoff or new/another ip
whduddn99
Considering that Bhaal and various dark themes are central elements, that kind of style would’ve been a huge burden for Larian. A game made like that would’ve run into the exact same problems as DAV.
JerbearCuddles
I am glad they didn’t. Veilguard’s art style is half the reason I dislike that game. Cartoony has its place. I just feel it would have been a disservice to BG3.
Moppo_
Why would they even think of that?
VoidHunter001
Would probably have felt like a very different game.
jonjongao
Yeah, the final style strikes a perfect balance… realistic enough for emotional weight, but still visually distinct.

“I would even say it was.. a cartoony style”
Apparently means “originally went for a TRULY CARTOONY art style!” according to this article?
This sounds like they had a stylized art style they tried out, then went with what they were always going to go with. It was probably cartoony as in similar to D:OS, which slightly exaggerated features.
Recover20
I think what drew me to Baldurs Gate was the high graphical fidelity mixed with such an expanse crpg.
I’m glad it has this graphical style it looks great
Argol228
if only they went with a better game system instead of driving even more people to 5e
wtfman1988
Thank god they did not do that.
iwantmisty
And here I am humbly waiting for authentic Dark Sun D&D crpg. We already have aesthetics nailed down: mad max fury road, doom the dark ages, etc.
