Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition was recently revealed. This was an almost surefire sign that there would be no more new DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 going forward.

Despite the signs, numerous fans apparently made requests of NetherRealm Studios for them to continue game support for Mortal Kombat 1. This prompted a response from NetherRealm Studios on social media platforms that completely set the record straight.

“We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on,” declared NetherRealm Studios.

“We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.” — NetherRealm Studios, May 2025

“We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”

At this point, there can be no doubt — there won’t be any more DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 going forward. Within the statement, NetherRealm Studios declared that there won’t be any additional DLC characters or story chapters. The character roster will not expand beyond the 35 that are currently playable.

Although there is no mention of the possibility of skins, we can assume that we won’t be getting anything new in this regard either. Indeed, NetherRealm Studios is now apparently focused on some unannounced game.

Notably, NetherRealm Studios had to make a similar announcement with Mortal Kombat 11. They outright stated that DLC was finished with for Mortal Kombat 11 and that the team had moved on to their next project, which we now know was Mortal Kombat 1.

“NetherRealm is now focusing on its next project and after more than two years of supporting Mortal Kombat 11, DLC for the game, including characters, has come to an end.” — NetherRealm Studios, July 2021

“NetherRealm is now focusing on its next project and after more than two years of supporting Mortal Kombat 11, DLC for the game, including characters, has come to an end,” said NetherRealm Studios back then.

However, there is actually a key difference between what happened with the conclusion of Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1. Although official support in the form of characters and story chapters has ended, NetherRealm Studios has expressed that they’ll still continue supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a little while longer in the form of balance adjustments and fixes.

With Mortal Kombat 11, this announcement truly marked the end for anything related to support in any capacity. Indeed, NetherRealm Studios did not release any noteworthy patches following the revelation.

We’ve typically seen NetherRealm Studios release a new patch for Mortal Kombat 1 just about every month. These patches have been pretty impactful to the point of even adding new moves to characters that were performing poorly.

While there are many fans that certainly would’ve liked more characters and story chapters, the promise of additional balance adjustments and fixes at least serves as a nice consolation prize.

In any event, tweaks to Mortal Kombat 1 should be enough to tide over NRS fans for a little bit while NRS works on its next project. Changes can be just impactful enough to keep the game feeling fresh for just a little bit longer, even without new characters getting added to the mix.

Just how long will NRS be able to continue supporting Mortal Kombat 1 with these patches? More than likely, there will be a point in which they will be ramping up development for their next game, ceasing this type of support altogether.

Of course, the best thing to do now is to just enjoy what Mortal Kombat 1 for what it is and for the continued support in the form of these balance adjustments.
