Video-Game Companies Have an AI Problem: Players Don’t Want It

  1. I’ve never seen such a push to get us excited over a piece of tech we don’t want since NFTs

  2. LondonDude123

I mean yes, but since when have AAA companies given half a fuck about what players want?

  3. Also players have an AI problem, video game companies don’t care that players don’t want it.

  4. Cheetawolf

We also never wanted loot boxes, microtransactions, in-game ads…

Sadly AI will become the new industry standard because the average gamer will still throw money at it.

  5. Video games are art. AI defeats the entire purpose

  6. smellyourdick

    >A large part of this backlash comes from the potential loss of jobs, plagiarism concerns and the heavy environmental cost. But players also seem uninterested in what generative AI has to offer. The idea of, say, a computer-controlled character who can react to anything you say to them has been possible for decades (see: the 1960s computer program *Eliza*) but has never turned into more than a novelty. AI-generated art is consistently sloppy and unpleasant, generally associated less with aesthetic merit and more with fake Facebook movie posters that convince your parents a sequel to *Breaking Bad* is coming this year.

fairly accurate assessment. it doesn’t seem that AI is going to be used to produce realistic dialogue from npcs like some gamers hope, it’s just another cost cutting technique used to maximize profits for shareholders.

  7. I remember square enix got a lot of financial problems with investing in NFT games that never turned a profit… Or interest from anyone.

  8. All companies should have this problem, fuck “AI” and all the corpos jumping on this bandwagon. I don’t need my dishwasher to have AI, I don’t need my videos games to have AI, I don’t need my car to have AI. I don’t want any of it.

  9. oversoul00

You don’t want it right now…but when, not if, AI can flesh out a game like Baldurs gate 3 and manage the procedural generation needed to make the game endless… you’ll beg for that.

We aren’t there yet but it’s coming.

  10. Something video game companies should be focusing on is using AI to detect cheaters in multiplayer games, but I guess that doesn’t make them any money.

  11. The higher ups don’t care what players want. They only care about what will make their wallets more full with less work.

  12. damargemirad

AI I want—enemies that grow with you, learn your tactics, and are a real challange.
AI I don’t want – making the actual game.

  13. Iggy_Slayer

The entire world doesn’t want this AI shit. Tech bro companies don’t care and they’re the ones who run the world so that’s why we’re getting this shit. They’re selling this nonsense to idiot investors who don’t know anything but they’re the ones with the money and make the stock go up or down, they’re the real customers not us.

  14. Until AI can do the dishes and clean my house, it can f*ck all the way off. I refuse to have anything to do with it.

  15. Nobah_Dee

I mean, do I want them to use AI to make NPC behavior more engaging?

    Sure.

Do I want them to use AI to make assets instead of using artists?

    No.

  16. I mean, is all about the implementation, using AI to help coding or something that makes the job of depelopers a little more easier, sure, but trying to use AI generated “””””art””””” thats just lazy bs.

  17. Gamers don’t want to notice AI. The fact that something is AI generated is kind of irrelevant in how it will be received… it just has be better quality than they have seen. If the AI can’t produce that then they aren’t interested.

Yes, that NPC can respond to whatever I say but it sound less natural than the prerecorded stuff where I only had a few changes… not interested yet.

If the art isn’t up to par, not interested yet… I don’t how much less time it took you to make.

If the story makes less sense, then I don’t care about how that came about.

I think we would be niave to think that AI won’t be a large part of game design moving forward. But its a tool and people who use that tool well will get good results… it doesn’t do all the work.

Video Game Companies Have a Problem: Consumers Want Original Content That’s Not Soulless Slop

  19. Affectionate_Win7012

I’m fine with the use of AI, if my games cost less and are still of same or better quality.

  20. Gloriouskoifish

Only thing id want from AI in games is interactive conversations with characters in game. Give me full freedom on what I can say to progress the story. Feel like stuff like that can’t be replicated otherwise.

  21. I think the proposition of AI controlled conversations with NPCs is a dumb idea.

Game are inherently meaning driven. You have quests, specific goals you want to achieve. Getting generated conversations might seem cool, but if you CAN ask about anything, you can VERY easily get lost in conversations and miss whatever clue or information you need. So either the game design/quest needs to be painfully obvious to remind you what to ask about, or you will get lost.

  22. I actually do want it… in a *few* cases. Like an indie daggerfall-alike that can be fully voiced when it otherwise wouldn’t be. Still requires quality control.

  23. LeftLiner

A solution looking for a problem. And the first problem that executives found is the one they always find: How can I make money without having to pay people?

  24. MannToots

The Skrim Ai companions prove its about how you use it.

  25. HuntedWolf

I think it’s more like “AI has a quality problem” and anyone using it to cut costs is putting out shitty games. Which gamers have never wanted.

  26. Literally no one I know in my professional life wants AI in any shape or form…

  27. Specialist-Onion-718

Video game companies have many other issues, much larger issues than AI right now.

  28. Ok-Prompt-59

I don’t know. That darth Vader AI in Fortnite is pretty cool. Kind of depends how it’s used. Imagine walking around in gta 6 and having conversations with random npcs.

  29. I am okay with AI content as long as it has high quality. I want to make diplomacy with AI via chatting in HOI5 or in other strategy games. I want to try to convince an AI that impersonates a historical figure.

  30. Personally I don‘t mind AI in games. i think it could make a great tool. That‘s the thing. A *tool*. Not the replacement for real work.

Take a world like GTA. It‘s already massive. Nobody would pretend that rockstar needs to write the script for every single NPC. Now *that‘s* a thing AI could do. But you don‘t leave it at that. You then *STILL* need tons of people supervising and testing their functionality, supervising the AI essentially.

AI could add life and features that humans cannot humanly do on a budget.

The reason I DON‘T want AI is that we all know what it means for gaming: cutting jobs, have AI do the labor for cheap, sloppy, and get a quick buck. That‘s going to ruin gaming.

It‘s just like AI in real life work: it can be a great tool, if you use it to replace human labor/input…. Well… what‘s the point for us to be there anymore?

  31. Am I the only one that’s excited about AI?

I have a particular use case in mind: Neverwinter Nights 3.

I want people to be able to make CRPG d&d adventures. With AI you could make them fully voiced, have amazing character portraits, maybe even custom character models.

Expand that, and maybe you could even get AI to create environmental tilesets.

Of course it’s not going to be as good as things made from scratch, by hand like Baldurs Gate 3, but that’s user-generated content for you. And for the best ones, those AI generated things just become prototyping tools.

AI could be the answer to finally have the dream come true of truly having D&D in your computer.

  32. Expedition 33 used AI, and it’s going to be a Game of the Year contender.

  33. LingonberryDue3468

    You guys are smallminded..
Imagine how much better soo many games would be if the AI were better and more interactive..
Like Crusader Kings or The Elder Scrolls..

People who say they dont want AI in their games are playing Fortnite or CS or something.

  34. Stilgar314

Players do want it. We’ve been praising good enemy AI for decades. We just don’t like the new way to use it they’ve found.

  35. Their “AI problem” isn’t that players don’t want it. Their “AI problem” is that they’re so shortsighted that they’d rather create AI slop to lower costs to push profit margins for their shareholders instead of actually doing their job of creating games, and gamers can recognize games that suck (created just for money aka AI drivel) vs games that don’t suck (passion projects).

  36. Odd-Fee-837

Players are rejecting AI slop games full of ai artwork and voice acting.

But devs and artists have been using machine learning for ages to clean up textures and create height maps or normal maps for ages.

But no one would dare mention that because people can’t differentiate between when artists are using it to avoid menial labor and when its destroying jobs.

  37. Nightman2417

    It’s the fucking suits!

Don’t bundle game developers in on that shit. A good dev would never unless they thought it would help them make the game *better*, not just create content and have it do something to save them time. It’s would be a tool, not an employee replacement.

  38. wolfannoy

It’s going to be soft plagiarism depending on the metadata the AI uses.

  39. hipdashopotamus

Yeah I think a lot of people aren’t against AI if it’s used responsibly as a tool for existing devs not as a way to replace those devs. For artists and voice actors they still need to be involved or games will just become AI slop. AI isn’t inherently bad but corporations are greedy and want to use it to cut costs for shareholders not make better games.

  40. Sorry-Programmer9826

Games are interactive stories. Stories are scripted. An AI just making stuff up to have a “real” conversation with you sounds good, but it means it’s no longer scripted. Like a book that randomly changed wouldn’t be very good because the ending wouldn’t make sense based on what has come before

  41. Sad_Log5732

I don’t know, I was skeptical of AI being in video games at first, but the Darth, Vader ai and fortnite was one of the nicest surprises. It was so freaking cool.

  42. JediJofis

Honestly from my experience, AI seems has always come off really friggin stupid.
