Favelas are widespread throughout Brazil, and not all of them are like the ones in Rio de Janeiro. However, they began to grow significantly during the Military Dictatorship here in Brazil, which also had a eugenicist system toward them.
Some were practically forgotten by the government, but in the case of Rio, there’s a constant struggle between criminal factions and paramilitary militias formed by the military police—which, by the way, is expanding more and more throughout Brazil and, like all military police, is full of fascists and children of the dictatorship.
