As a former deliveryman, one of the reasons Death Stranding became my favorite is because Kojima made a superhero out of one of the most "basic" jobs.
Basic is in quotes because if you've ever delivered you know there's nothing basic about driving a box truck, using a forklift to take down pallets and navigating an electric pallet jack in store without destroying everything.
Since you can finish deliveries for other players it actually makes an impact on the real world, too. That sense of accomplishment from a solid day of manual labor shines through, just a bit, in Death Stranding.
And an honest days hard work is one of the best feelings in the world, imo.

Fallout: New Vegas did the same. The main character is literally known as ‘Courier 6’.
Watching the trailer for the second game was jaw-dropping. Sure it’s a “walking simulator,” but damn is it beautifully done.

The best games are mundane job simulators with some added wow factor, tbh.
Hideo Kojima is such a genius, he took the most hated, boring mission type – the delivery quest – and turned it into one of the best games ever.
During COVID, no less.
Essential Worker
To be fair, he’s a delivery man that can’t die, that can sense ghosts, and whose bodily fluids can hurt those ghosts. He’s got a few superpowers to work with.
Sam’s clunky visual presentation is a literal interpretation of what a game character would actually look like lugging around their inventories. Meanwhile, the A to B “game loop” doesn’t differ very much from most other open world games (apart from traversal being mindless in those). Geralt, the Dragonborn, etc – all glorified delivery workers who just follow objective markers around.
