The artist Antireal has found some of her poster assets in the Marathon Alpha. Marathon seems to unmistakably steal her whole design language too. Bungie has stolen artist's assets before, but an entire style… really?

inb4 removed for some shitty reason, can’t believe shit like this still happens with triple-A devs

  2. Nabrok_Necropants

They “borrowed” every concept in the game. It will be dead on arrival if it releases in it’s current state. It is completely devoid of originality.

When I saw the two arrows I was like “okay, but that looks like it could be fairly common” but then the text and icons are literally copy-pasted. Shameful from Bungie.

  4. Do they have like no one that just likes… reverse image searches or something? Someone that just checks to make sure this doesn’t happen? This is like the third or fourth time in recent memory lol

  5. ThatEdward

Wow, scummy. Feels like companies rely on the fact small artists like them can’t afford to sue

  6. RealBlack_RX01

What happens now? Do they have to remove it or will there be a lawsuit?

  7. SaintAlunes

Not surprised, considering how half assed the game is

Bungie is so egregiously run that honestly nothing surprises me anymore.

They hired 500+ people after the activation split and have nothing to show for it.

Destiny’s mainline expansions have been good overall (save for lightfall holy shit) but still pale in content compared to earlier ones.

Marathon is a plane being built while it’s in the air.

And every other project they had died in early development, and then all those 500 people were fired.

Bungie has proven itself to be a shitty company towards people countless times, and it’s insane that it still gets away with it in an age where everyone can easily gather people’s attention to boycott.

Triple A companies are stepping lower every day and asking for more money with nobody batting an eye and it needs to change.

This is what happens when you run a revolving door artist studio, instead of actually building a team of people you trust.

I’m not sure if this is common knowledge but if you go on ArtStation the number of people with Destiny assets in their portfolio is fucking massive. It’s usually just a weapon or two, maybe a couple ships or sparrows (the speeder bikes). It speaks to a pattern where Bungie will contract out a lot of their art work instead of having people in house do it, presumably because it’s cheaper to only pay for artists exactly when you need them.

But the downside is that you’re always working with new artists and sometimes those artists cut corners like this. I’m sure they’ll confirm this was an external contractor and promise never to work with them again, but that isn’t the root of the problem. It’ll happen again, just with a different artist.

BUT BUNGIE ARE A SMALL DEV AND NEED ALL THE HELP THEY CAN GET. /S

Seriously though, how do companies think they can get away with this over and over again? In this day and age with the internet and technology to easily confirm plagiarism, plus the ability to use AI to view and make alterations to images/videos, you’d think companies would learn that the people, or person themselves, will easily find out if work has been used that’s not theirs.

Well if it’s any consolation, Marathon looks like it will be a forgettable experience that the company will have to abandon. So at least they’re not making something that their shareholders will be stoked about.

  13. Freakuency_DJ

Every time this happens, the artist is the one to break the news. They’re always close enough to Bungie to have noticed.

Why would we assume there aren’t dozens more artists who aren’t paying attention to them that they ripped off? On top of creating assets so good they’re worth stealing, we expect the artists to moonlight as a detective just to get a paycheck?

  14. GameBroJeremy

At this point, it’s no longer an excuse to say a third party did this. Bungie has been caught doing this multiple times, it can’t be a coincidence and it’s clear they don’t care.

  15. What, did the 3.6 billion dollars Sony lined their pockets with not help hire an actual art staff?

  16. MaterialDefender1032

This only solidifies my disgust for Bungie using the Marathon name for this product. Way to ruin the legacy

  17. I was excited for this game, then Arc Raiders took over and now this… Fuck this game lmao

  18. unfamous2423

Chevrons are a shape like triangles, so that one doesn’t seem to mean much, but the rest is pretty straightly lifted from the designs.

  19. LordSlickRick

If you like the designs so much, just hire them. It’s far cheaper than this bs. 1 month of lawyers is so much more than hiring 1 struggling artist.

  20. After seeing and playing Arc raiders…. This is gonna be such a flop unless they do sth insane behind the doors. ARC is incredible.

  21. KovalSNIPE17

god damn Arc Raiders is gonna shred this game to bits

  22. desperaterobots

This absolutely sucks ass and I’m fucking A N N O Y E D. The artist *must* be compensated, the designers involved *must* face disciplinary action [plagiarism is SERIOUS], but it’s also always going to be difficult for any organisation, large or small, to QA what their trusted but overworked art teams will be producing.

There’s never going to be a position in the company dedicated to researching the origin of the ideas of the team employed to come up with ideas. The artist(s) involved might have had every intention to update these placeholder ‘example’/’moodboard’ elements and then got rotated out/fired/had too much other work dumped on them with hard deadlines, etc etc etc.

Ultimately, the artist needs to be compensated at the very least.

  23. GoblinBurgers

And there goes any intentions I still had of giving this game a chance

  24. Wait what the fuck it’s actually just copy past lmfao
