DOOM The Dark Ages on Steam Deck is a “nightmare” even at “low-quality” and in linear levels

  1. You’d have to be a maniac to think this game would handle well on a Steam Deck.

  2. bobmlord1

One of the first big games targeting ‘next-gen’ feature sets exclusively so it’s not really a surprise given the aging steamdeck hardware.

I think anyone using a steamdeck is aware of the limitations though it’s never been marketed as a high end a AAA game machine.

  3. DagonParty

    Surprising who exactly?

I love my Deck, but it ain’t for graphically demanding games

  4. I mean, if I’m not mistaken the steam deck hardware barely meets minimum specs for the game.

  5. surrealutensil

Newsflash Doom the dark ages also does not run well on my toaster  /facepalm

  6. Sequenzer9

The Steam Deck is tech with a finite limit attempting to play PC games which are made with continually evolving and improving tech. There’s always gonna be a limit to what it can do.

  7. rondo_martin

Does the Steam Deck even have the hardware for RT?

  8. wicktus

that’s more for the next steam deck which should have an RDNA4 or UDNA APU: Much better raster but also raytracing performance and FSR4 ML upscaling.

The current steam deck is not going to replace at 15W your 210W PS5 on truly current-gen games like Indiana jones, MH Wilds or now Doom, even with low presets

It was never marketed as such.

  9. adorablebob

It’s got forced RT. Why did anyone think this was going to run on the Steam Deck?

  10. 2Tacos4oneDollar

Use moonlight and stream it to your deck

  11. Brewster345

Do people not realise Eternal was released 5yrs ago!

  12. what_mustache

It’s a brand new game known for pushing the limits of graphics, of course it wont work on a 3 year old handheld

  13. dorsman84

Not sure why this is a surprise. Steam deck isn’t super powerful at this point.

  14. wanderso24

People need to understand – and be ok with – the idea that the Deck can’t handle everything.

  15. BrewsWithTre

What kind of comments do some people think the steam deck is running?

It’s better than a switch but its not a freaking Xbox series X yall

  16. ttubehtnitahwtahw1

When are people going to understand that steam deck verified means nothing other than it can launch, more or less. It’s not a metric for performance. Stop it.

  17. Gluv221

Not every brand new AAA game needs to run on the deck

  18. Rex__Lapis

Not every game has to run on steam deck

  19. WholesomeBigSneedgus

is this before or after the update they released yesterday?

  20. There are obviously games that Steam Deck can’t handle well. This is one of them.

    What’s the surprise?

  21. Affectionate_Draw_43

Hand held laptop can’t handle intense graphics game. Call me surprised

  22. RagnarokNCC

The people who try this deserve the performance they get, really.

  23. nrseven

Games not even deck verified, what did you honestly expect?

  24. Yeah… not EVERY game is going to run on the steam deck and that’s 100% perfectly fine! I play lower demanding games on my deck and my graphic intense ones on my setup at home. Don’t know why anyone would expect to play everything on a tiny handheld that cost less then $500 lol

  25. RosieQParker

Yeah, and the Minecraft server I ran off a garage sale htpc had lousy chunk loading speeds.

  26. Omegabird420

And people gave me shit when I said that the aging internal hardware of the Steamdeck are a problem.

It’s not a knock on the Deck,it’s an awesome concept, but it’s reallly in need of a new versions because forced RT games are becoming a thing.

  27. EfficiencyOk9060

This is unexpected? Doesn’t the game have always on RTX even at low settings? Those games always run poorly on handheld PCs. Steam Deck was for catching up on your backlog pretty much 5 minutes after it came out. It is not playing 9/10 current AAA games at any performance level I’d deem playable.

  28. Foostini

I mean even as a Deck owner and avid user of it even at the time of release it wasn’t running the new hotness and, bluntly, the battery life of most handhelds mean they’re not really meant to on the go. Thing’s the perfect indie and emulator machine, anything I can run past that is a bonus.

  29. jBalls902

And I’m sure this comes to a surprise to absolutely no one

  30. marniconuke

It’s because of the stupid forced rtx, i don’t know why bethesda is forcing that on all their games. Specially when people will turn it off with modding anyways.

I believe there has to be a deal behind it, like them getting paid by nvidia, some friends believe it’s to push consoles, who knows.

  31. I was also pretty bummed when Halo 3 didn’t run on my GameBoy Color.

  32. leviathab13186

Can’t wait for the “guys! I have the best settings! Do this and you’ll get a solid 19fps!”

  33. Snizzlesnoot

People should be making an issue about “Verified” status. There are countless games that Steam has “verified” that really should not be verified. Meanwhile, some games run incredibly well on the Deck and are still “unsupported” or “unknown” status.

I have no problem if a game can’t run on the Deck. I just want. A little more transparency about it.

“latest high end id tech game wont run on ~5 year old handheld tech”

    hmmm… duuuh
