unless it’s direct family, tell them you’re gonna charge them.
your uncle jimbo shouldn’t be calling you at 11 pm to come over and help him get espn+ on his roku like it’s not a school night and you have finals the next day

I know sliiightly more about computers than the average person and my family and co-workers think that I am a genius. I mean, I just google every problem and it‘s been working out for me. anyone could do that.

My neighbour asked why his 5 year old laptop with hard disk was running slow.
I told him to replace hdd with SSD and he said that he doesn’t want to spend money on SSD.
I told him that I had extra 240 gb SSD and I could replace it for $10. Fucker agreed first but later when I was installing SSD, he asked me give it for free saying how he was friends with my family.
I had already opened the laptop so he thought I would do it anyway now.
I refused to install SSD and left the laptop in same state.
Later he asked my father again saying I should fix his laptop. I told him my price for the whole thing is $15 or he can go to a repair shop.
After that nobody in my area ever asked to get laptop, pc fixed by me.

It was fine when I had free time. Now, I charge because my time literally cost something. If it’s just a laptop, I tell them to bring it and I’ll take a look, just don’t expect it fixed instantly. Honestly Windows full reset feature saved me a few times. Before that was a thing, I just do a full format.
I can’t even give away old PC, because a lot of them will ask “why didn’t you just give it to me”. So what I do is “sell” it to my younger cousins for bare minimum. Reasonable enough price that they can manage but no one will question.

On the other hand grandma treating me like an absolute god for fixing her problem that I just had to Google and it took me like 10 minutes is a great feeling
