If anyone of you played Sim City 2000 back in the day, you’ll recognize this structure. This was my introduction to the word “Arcologies”. Back then, I thought about the way Blade Runner looked. Later,I thought about the towers in the megacities in Dredd.

For me it was the Arcologies in the sci-fi game “Hardwar” in 1998. Funnily enough they just re-released it on Steam.

I liked how there was a TV on the bottom of the arcology icon so that your Sim City 2000 dystopian citizens could get their corporate propaganda. I also liked how the utopian version was basically a solar punk tower.

That was my favorite one because it looked so evil.

The brief line in the description about the sub-humans living the air vents fascinated me as a kid. I wanted more info so badly

Arcologies are pretty fascinating and there are only a handful of them in existence. Despite much scheming and posturing by famous architects, a functional one has never been built on purpose. McMurdo Station and Whittier, Alaska are the only two places that loosely fit the definition.

  7. The IRL origin of the word is pretty fascinating. I’ve been to Arcosanti and while not what you might envision, it’s still quite cool in it’s own right.
