Has anybody heard about YouTube video compression?

YouTube’s video compression sucks on 1080p videos. Like to a point that they are basically unwatchable on anything larger than a phone. But 4k videos are fine.
Pro tip for anyone uploading videos to YT:
Even if your video is 1080p, export it as 4k. This way YT won’t compress it so much.

Meanwhile me: 4k videos on my 1440p smartphone display🤓

1440p video has higher bitrate than 1080p, so even if your monitor is 1080p, 1440p would look much better

144p videos on my 1440p monitor.

I tried to upload a 1440p video, but youtube shows it only up to 1080p. The same with Reddit

1080p videos on my 1440p monitor….. dissapointment

Youtube also provides high bitrate option with 1080p when selecting video quality for some videos, not sure if the uploader has any control on that

so picture quality is essentially two things, bitrate (how much data) and resolution (how big the original picture is).
people are accustomed to thinking quality is only resolution due to streaming sites naming their different quality profiles after the resolution but a 10k bitrate 720p video will look a lot better than a 2k 1080p one.

8k on my 4k monitor.

That’s because during Covid, Google decided to capitalize on it as a prime excuse to save a buck, and reduced the bitrate of 1080p and 720p videos (Hence why youtube 720p no longer has the HD logo), however 1440p and 4k remain, because they were less frequently used, and when they were, it was generally by users with youtube premium.

It’s due to the crappy YouTube compression as far as I know
Dr_Axton
I do that on my ultrawide, because for whatever reason 2560×1080 is actually considered 1440p by YouTube

I used to use 4K video output on YouTube because 1080p on my 1080p monitor looked like 720p.
YouTube’s compression is very lossy.
The Bitrate on 4k is probably massively higher too.
