No, sorry, put the party poppers away, Chrono Trigger isn’t getting a remake, as far as anyone knows anyway

Aw man, that would have been so cool! I would have loved to see a Chrono Trigger remake. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the future!

  2. AbundlaSticks

Being gay, I was like, why the fuck are people doing poppers for Chrono Trigger? Lol

Edit: If you downvote me you’re gay too

  3. RevolutionaryKey5082

If it does happen I hope it’s a faithful remake and not like the FF7 one.

  4. Brilliant-Net-750

Shit, we wasted the good celebration on fake news

  5. KeyanFarlandah

Why do you have to crush my dreams like this

  6. Coffeedemon

Good. Save the energy for something that isn’t already perfect.

  7. who the fuck wants to ruin Chronic Trigger with a remake?

JFC I’m going to fire it up right now

I only recently got into jRPGs so I only played Chrono Trigger for the first time like a year ago and even with zero nostalgia for the game I don’t know why you’d remake this.

Well I get “because they think it would make a lot of money” but the existing game is amazing even by modern standards and the 90s pixel art style 100% holds up in an era where many indies are trying to replicate this style.

  9. Kynandra

If they ever remade this or Earthbound I would riot

  10. Mooon8983

Translation error is a very convenient excuse, who knows if its real or not

  11. marmosettacos

Fine, but at least put the original CT on modern consoles

  12. fffan9391

SNES was peak 2D graphics. I don’t think most games from that era need remakes.

  13. DamnImAwesome

If it gets one I hope they outsource it to Sandfall. They clearly understand the magic behind JRPGs

I don’t think pixel art really need remake unless they do something like final fantasy

  15. Jayce86

The only thing it needs is an option to clean up the sprites. My eyes can’t handle jagged pixels anymore.

  16. Shadow288

Saw all of the final fantasy remakes on sale on Xbox last night. Was thinking maybe Chrono trigger will get its day in the sun but I guess that day has not happened yet!

  17. Kashyyykonomics

Can I get out my party poppers to celebrate it not happening, because I figure they’d fuck it up?

  18. thedean246

The game seems to hold up super well. There’s really no need to remake it.

  19. Agitated-Mastodon153

Just an HD pixel remaster like the Dragon Quest games recently got is all this game needs plus a few QoL features baked in.

I still remember when it was ported to the PS1. The Toriyama anime cut scenes were nice, the load times were ass, though.

Honestly, Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite RPGs but it’s one of the last games I ever want to see get remade. Not because the original is perfect or because it doesn’t need one, but because I don’t trust SE to not miss every opportunity to make a remake something truly special and I feel like there are very *very* specific requirements to feel like they actually did things right.

For one, the aesthetic is going to be very important. Chrono Trigger has the distinct Toriyama anime at style but there’s a more painterly quality to the way it’s actually colored than something like DBZ. I think a remake should be in 3D but I’d want them to actually put the effort in to match that quality with the cel shading. I don’t want to see them just repeat the same aesthetic they did for DQ11. I want to see the graphics actually match the more dynamic lighting we see in the official art. A good example is the posters that came with the original SNES copies. I want to see that in 3D. Not more DQ11 or FighterZ.

For another, I don’t want to just see just a straight up 1:1 recreation of the combat or exploration. I want to see them use a remake as an opportunity to implement ideas they weren’t able to before because of hardware limitations. They originally wanted a much more dynamic battle system where the environment had more interaction. We only see that in a very small handful of fights in the original but it was meant to have a much bigger role. I also want to see them flesh out battle positioning and implement new ways for the player to control character and enemy positioning to maximize other position-based techs. For exploration and talking to NPCs, they originally wanted a system where you could change certain outcomes of interactions and slightly alter events from moving around or walking away mid dialog. Sounds very weird and not sure how any of that would work but a teenage would be a good opportunity to revive the idea and expand on it with more ways you could impact conversations and events than just moving around. There was plenty more that ended up on the cutting room floor due to hardware limitations too. A remake is an opportunity to re-explore those ideas and try to make the game they originally wanted to and I’m sure there are even add new ideas that would fit right in that they may never have thought of originally.

I didn’t trust SE to put in any of this effort though. I hear we’d just see a budget teenage asking the lines of Trial of Mana which, while I still very much enjoyed, is not the treatment a game like CT deserves. I want to see something with a real budget and scope.

should remake chrono cross without the ass combat system

  23. Vincedicola

Yeah if they would just release it on Xbox Series and PS5 that’d be fine then, no need for a remake

  24. PCP_Panda

Just give it to a studio that gives a shit! That game is history

  25. Darkray117

Just port it to modern consoles….. That’s all I ask.

  26. Ebolatastic

I’m glad it isn’t happening. The reason Chrono Trigger is so great is because of how tight and filler free it is. A remake would probably come with some awful 3d conversion and packed with tons of extra filler/cringe. Imo just do a hand drawn remaster.

  27. GrayingGamer

Chrono Trigger is probably my favorite RPG of all time. I bought it on release day – $80 bucks at Toys R’ Us. Yes – $80 dollars of 1995 money! I immersed myself in it for months. I still replay it every few years.

Does it NEED a remake? No. It’s damn near close to perfection.

That’s why if it DID get a remake, I would, ironically, want it NOT to be super faithful to the original, but try to be innovative, just like the multi-character combined attacks were innovative back in the day.

Something similar to Expedition 33 and want Sandfall did with it would be awesome just for the visual fidelity.

I think you could honor the original and do something new too – since it is already a time travel story with multiple branches. I think it would be interesting if they made people THINK it was a remake, but then it’s revealed in game as you progress that it is a split timeline. With the right passionate developers who have love and respect for the original, you could do something really cool.

  28. Battlescarred98

Fine. Make a new entry to the series with modern tech! How cool would it be to co-op and change something in the past and have it have real time effects for the other player. Time travel mechanics could be super fun.
