While Sony doesn’t have a permanent mascot like Nintendo has with Mario or SEGA with Sonic the Hedgehog, a handful of Sony characters have been considered the unofficial mascots at one point or another.
One of these former PlayStation mascots is in danger of losing its spot in the PlayStation family altogether.

Until Dawn Movie Shows The PlayStation Productions Intro With One Character Omitted
Eagle-eye Radec (via PSLS), noticed that the PlayStation Productions intro shown at the start of the Until Dawn movie adaptation has removed Sackboy from the stable of characters. Pictured above is the intro from the Gran Turismo movie, which was shown in cinemas in 2023.
In comparison to Until Dawn’s intro, you’ll see the cute-as-a-button character has been removed:
While Sony hasn’t confirmed anything, this doesn’t bode well for the character who once had its own gaming franchise (LittleBigPlanet) to call its own. To date, Sony has not given any indication that there is a new LittleBigPlanet game being made, and the character’s lone standalone title, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, which was released in 2020, wasn’t as big of a hit as some might have hoped, and there’s no word on a sequel to that either.
If the character is indeed being phased out, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit, as PlayStation has a more popular character making the rounds now: Astro Bot. The platformer has not only won multiple Game of the Year awards, but it’s gotten so much admiration and success that even Sony’s corporate overlords are pushing for more games like it.
Sony has also confirmed they are pursuing an Astro Bot movie. If that sees the light of day, perhaps Sony will officially give the character the PlayStation mascot label.

Is this the end of Sackboy and the LittleBigPlanet franchise? It sure seems like it given the latest release was Sackboy: A Big Adventure on PS4, PS5. There was an Ultimate Sackboy game released for mobile devices in 2023, but we aren’t going to count that for obvious reasons.
If this is the end of the line for Sackboy, the character will join other notable PlayStation characters like Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, and more, now dormant IPs tucked away in PlayStation Studios’ vault.
