Expedition 33 publisher: “Elder Scrolls: Oblivion didn’t seem to harm us at all”

It must have, surely. I think their expectations of themselves were just too low.

At least they seem happy with their launch.

  2. JimPranksDwight

I was going to wait but when I saw it was only 45$ I just bought both of them. Given the recent news that MS and Nintendo are raising their prices so high it was definitely worth it.

At worst it may have delayed some sales, considering people who would play both would have bought Oblivion first and so might either be waiting to finish oblivion or for their next paycheck. I have a couple friends like that.

And then at least for me this game came out of no where, and I doubt I’m the only one, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the wave is still rolling and they’ll continue to see a steady rate of purchases and interest as opposed to one large spike in interest upon release.

Of course not, their core audiences are completely different. “RPG” is way too generic of a genre to assume there would be much overlap between people who like open world games (and specifically a re-release of an older one with an established playerbase) and a turn-based final fantasy inspired game. Not to say people didn’t buy both or chose one over the other but I don’t think they were ever in danger of oblivion sucking up all the oxygen in the room.

  5. I think Oblivion might have been helped them.

I’m not a huge gamer. Decided to play Oblivion due to the massive hype (on game pass). Ended up playing this game instead.

I put oblivion on hold to finish expedition 33. The story just sucked me in and I have to find out what happens now!

  7. Nowhereman2380

Having Gamepass was really worth it this month.

  8. I dropped oblivion to pay expedition 33 and I know a few others that have as well.

  9. Mikimao

Yeah thats the thing about us gamers. Some of us have more than 1, or even more than 2 games.

  10. Spezsucksandisugly

I was planning to buy oblivion but hadn’t got around to it and then clair obscur came out and I decided to get that instead.

  11. Reach-Nirvana

I bought both because they’re both cheap. I’ve spent the same on one game, so getting two awesome games for the price of one was great for me. Jumping back and forth between them because they’re different enough that it keeps it feeling fresh. I’ve also played Oblivion before, so I don’t really need to focus on the story.

  12. Why would it. Two different genres, and you just get both.

  13. Of course it didn’t. They’re completely different games with minimal audience overlap. People think that the core audience is the same because they’re both RPGs, but there are massive, fundamental differences between Western RPGs and JRPGs.

You may have a fan of one try the other and realize it’s not for them, but this isn’t like Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 where they were both FPS games.

  14. MannToots

There’s millions of gamers.  Room for both.

  15. bingeboy

I wish I had money for this game… hopefully in the next couple months

  16. oldmanjenkins51

I didn’t have to buy either of them

  17. lazzzym

I know a few people that subbed to Game Pass just for Oblivion and then got Expedition 33 dropped on them as a surprise not realising that would be in there also.

  18. cstrifeVII

Both on pc gamepass, so huge fucking win for that service for me.

  19. omegalul64

I feel like the gameplay between the games is pretty different and thus they were likely to have different audiences anyways

  20. GoldenGekko

Reupped my game pass for these two.

  21. CountChoculasGhost

To me it isn’t about the money. It’s about time.

I bought Oblivion first and I just can’t juggle two games at the same time. I’d never end up finishing either. I’ll play E33 eventually. I’m pretty into it, but gotta get through some other games first.

  22. Imthescarecrow

The only reason I even heard of Expedition 33 was because of all the people saying Oblivion was going to crush them coming out at the same time. Ended up getting GamePass, trying both, disliking Oblivion, and buying E33 on Steam. So, I’d say Oblivion helped them

  23. IJustJason

People when they realise they can indeed own both games at the same time

  24. Walt_Jrs_Breakfast

Or maybe it proves that if your game is actually good then the release window and marketing don’t matter as much.

  25. SuperSaiyanIR

Hardly any overlap between the two games. I finished Expedition 33 because it’s a shorter game because I’ll be playing Oblivion for a long time and it’d more of a game I continue playing in between games.

  26. Greenfire32

I don’t know where this whole “gamers will only buy one game ever” mindset came from.

Just because I might not buy your game on launch doesn’t mean I’m never buying it at all. Companies need to get off their day-one sales high horses and just release when the game is ready.

  27. GreyRevan51

Playing both at the same time rn since they’re both on gamepass ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Happy to hear how well expedition 33 is doing, they deserve it

  28. JPK12794

I got both, Expedition 33 is an incredible game I’m just going to have to wait for some more patches because performance is…odd, close up shots tank my frame rate but wider shots it goes back up to stable and playing with the settings doesn’t seem to help much. Really takes me out of it despite it being fantastic as a game.

  29. Thopterthallid

Very different types of games. Only thing they have in common is swords and magic really.

  30. CrazedRaven01

It’s almost as if two different kinds of games can coexist with each other!

(yes, I know they’re both RPGs but one is turn based while the other has a bigger emphasis on open world exploration)

  31. Electric-Mountain

Slightly different crowd that plays one or the other. A ton of people bought both.

  32. RightlyKnightly

I mean, it definitely has, I can afford max one game a month and Oblivion took that this month. Hoping to get this in May but isn’t Indiana Jones PS5 coming out?

I expect a long tail of sales for 33

  33. Cloud_N0ne

    I’m glad to hear it.

E33 definitely is not a game for me, and the original Oblivion is my favorite game of all time, but I’m really happy to see a game of this quality from this small of a team doing well.

  34. F0rmlessLikeWater

I’m waiting for Lumiere Edition. I hope they restock it. I’m just happy for their success. Can’t wait to play it!

  35. Niklaus15

Different genres and play style, I personally bought both and I’m having a blast playing both at the same time

  36. Shaggy_AF

    Games pass go brr.

That being said, go try E33 if you’re on the fence between the two. It is a substantial masterpiece.

  37. TheS3KT

What a win. Both on game pass. Tried a oblivion again but I wasn’t going to commit to a game I already beat vs a new story game.

  38. EliAsH__

Fuck I really wanna play it but I’m in the middle of nowhere with only phone reception for the next 2 weeks :/

Hotspot’s been enough to download a few oblivion mods, but not a 55gb game. That would be all my data unfortunately

  39. Nihilism-is-fun

Why can’t so many people play more than one game at a time? I’ve never understood this, especially when they’re different genres.

  40. Lunarcomplex

Having a deluxe edition for less than $80 or $100 was pretty wild to see

  41. UltimateToa

I chose to by E33 rather than oblivion, remaster vs new game kinda thing

  42. Justis29

Y’all realize there can be multiple successful videogames… Right? On top of that these two games are RPGs yes but are very different in many ways

  43. TheMagicStik

I swear this has got to be the most astro turfed game of the year. I don’t know anybody playing this game but there’s 3 nothing burger posts about this game a day that hit the front page, always with a crazy vote to comment ratio.

  44. Moreinius

Tbf, it exceeded expectations so much, that it probably took some attention off of Oblivion even.

  45. Slimsuper

Make a good game and people will buy it

  46. AlphariusHailHydra

Made a game so good that even Oblivion Remaster shadow dropping didn’t even eclipse it.
