Me:”Yes switches voltages of the power unit…”
    Friend2: “we just found out…”

Got to say, I have been to and hosted many a LAN party in my day, but I don’t think I every had a player suspended with duct tape. That is peak LAN party there.

  3. a920116

  4. josephseeed

I can still smell it like it was yesterday

  5. dicedtea

I was born after the golden age of LAN parties so sadly I didn’t experience them

  6. Expensive-Balance-84

2002, it was 8 of us playing sof2 and the best of all r6 games, Ravenshield.

  7. ridsama

My neck hurts from looking at this picture.

  8. mikee8989

Yeah it was during covid a bunch of guys at a friends house all with our gaming laptops. Pretty fun. Played Minecraft and Valorant.

  9. Reaver75x

The guy hanging must have eyebrow wrinkles starting in his early 20s just from this day alone.

  10. just-_-just

I’m 44 and I decided to get my friends together and have a LAN. We all agreed that playing over discord is better. I mean we had fun but it was a ton of work and we all have families so we couldn’t play until 6am like when we were young. It was a memory better left a memory.

  11. retro-gaming-lion

Playing a unity port of tanki online with the creator and his brother. IT WAS FREAKING AWSOME!!!

  12. TheMends

Last one we played Minecraft and CS 1.6 in my friend’s house all night. Took my desktop there, and my older friend even helped me clean up and switch the thermal paste from my GTX 650. Had an FX6300 back then.

  13. KronosGreek

My first and last “lan” party was in Seattle with my friend. We were playing a mobile moba that could have rivaled league of legends in time, game called Vainglory. They eventually make a PC port but the game was bought by some company in China for SEA e sports and they discontinued servers in other countries. The game is still playable on the servers, but everything you had is on a hard drive somewhere hoping to be put back out at some point by the devs

  14. At my last lan party (in 2004) i spilled ice cream in my USB ports and threw up in the street from too much junk food… good times

  15. Storma9eddon

I just made one 7 months ago. Family was out, invited over 6 colleagues. Had a Cisco and Netgear switch in place. We played all the old stuff we remembered being good. Warcraft III (Original), Quake, UT, COD4, CS:S, Urban Terror (Such a wonky ass game 😀 ) . Had a blast. In theory this year should mark Act II.

  16. _Jesslynn

nope, I didnt get into PC’s until 2015..

HOWEVER, those wrap-around headphones were sick back then.

  17. cnctcat

Man, my last LAN party was a year ago. I was admittedly thrown out after my laptop charger exploded but still, they aren’t a thing if the past.

  18. FightinJack

2 Xbox 360s playing Halo 2 in different rooms of the house, each with 4 controllers, lots of shouting and a “happy new year” mixed in somewhere.

  19. Every year we have a massive one in Spain. Euskal Encounter

  20. UsefulChicken8642

uhg, the heat. so much foreskin feta was made at early 2000 LAN parties.

  21. WessyNessy

Very vividly. 2006 – my buddy’s grandmother had a double wide trailer she rented that was vacant. For his birthday we got 12 of the boys together and literally played from Friday-Sunday non stop. It’s one of my most cherished memories. Damn we had so much fun. Rough housed, ate too much pizza and cake, swapped teams with random draws. I’ve got goose bumps writing this out. Those really were the days.

This photo always comes back and never dies here’s the lore behind it:

The iconic photo of a gamer duct-taped to the ceiling during a LAN party has become a legendary image in internet culture. This event took place on March 29, 2003, in Mason, Michigan, where a group of high school friends frequently gathered for LAN parties, playing games like Counter-Strike, Command & Conquer, and StarCraft.

The idea to duct-tape someone to the ceiling beam was spontaneous, sparked by boredom and curiosity. Drew Purvis volunteered for the stunt, and with the help of his tall friend Brian Schaeffer, they attempted to suspend him using duct tape. The first attempt was uncomfortable and short-lived, but after adding pillows for cushioning, they succeeded in keeping Drew aloft for about two hours. The notion of him gaming while suspended was an afterthought; they stacked tables so he could reach his computer and continue playing.

The photo, captured by Brian, was later shared on gaming forums and quickly went viral, becoming a symbol of early 2000s gaming culture. Over the years, it has resurfaced periodically, prompting nostalgia and discussions among internet users. In 2017, Kotaku published an article detailing the story behind the image, and a documentary titled “Internet Legends: Duct-Taped Gamer” is in development to further explore this unique piece of gaming history.

This incident remains a testament to the creativity and camaraderie of early gaming communities, capturing a moment of youthful spontaneity that continues to resonate with many.

Last year, we did play the raft and supermarket together and lethal company. The first lan parties we had were doom1 and diablo 1 with serial cable. Diablo 1 was one of rare games that did work with three players if someone had ps2 mouse and had two free com ports for other players.

  24. I was just a little shit when LAN was popular, but my brother is a decade older and during highschool his buddies would come over, bring 4 Xboxs 2 TVs and 2 protectors and play 16 player halo 3 lobbies on LAN. During those I would be sent to my room because the teens tended to get rowdy. But one day I remember going down and playing on one of the TV’s, I got my shit pushed in but that was what cemented my love for halo so W.

  25. ElMariachi003

YES – my first LAN parties were Racing LANs, so on top of lugging our Rigs and monitors, we had our Logitech or Thrustmaster Wheels and pedals in tow as well. 😁 Good times playing fully modded versions of EA’s F1 2000 and 2001.

  26. Strongit

Yep, it was a couple months ago with my high school/college friends. We played minecraft. Loved every minute.

  27. Fletaun

2013 playing dota allstar, csgo, warcraft 3 custom map all night. i remember putting our heavy ass pc into a bike with pepsi and chips.
    Good times

  28. CompleteTruth

Aside from the good times and laughs, what I remember most is lugging my monster CRT up and down stairs.

  29. Helicopter_Strong

even though i am a late zoomer, me and the boys have a lot of lan parties we usually play what we’re collectively in the hype of last lan party (which was like a week ago) we played r6 siege and minecraft

  30. jme2712

Yes, in high school we played counterstrike literally in the computer lab the teacher sanctioned it, and was watching out the door for any snoopers

  31. Sayaka__

yes I remember always running a local Unreal Tournament server with tons of maps and mods installed. I even made some maps just for the LAN. Great times.

  32. Skreemin

People saying they missed the era of LAN parties is wild to me. I host two every year, and have for 15 years. I’m 47 y/o btw…

  33. chappersyo

I’ll let you guys in on a little secret. You can still do lan parties now. Sure, a little of the magic is gone because high speed internet and discord has made it so that we can play online with no issues, but it’s still nowhere near as fun as getting all your pals together in the same room to play. We do it a couple of times a year and always have a blast even if we’re playing the exact same games we would be playing together from our own houses.

  34. My last LAN party was back in 2018 in technical college, where 6 of us played Halo: Combat Evolved on the computers in class. It was almost always a hectic game of Capture the Flag.

  35. Cuber-sub30

So we just not gonna talk about the guy taped to the roof?

  36. TheBertil

Ofc. Using coaxial cables for a serial network and destroying my friends in Doom/halflife/dukenukem/unreal. Those where the days.

  37. No one is going to mention the dude duck taped to de ceiling in the picture?!

  38. Own_Initiative396
