This is some great advice a lot of people forget.
For me this was the reason why I stopped playing wow. I was to busy with daily quests and other filler content than actually enjoying the game.

Don’t talk about Dyson Sphere Program like that!

Also, you don’t have to finish every game you play nor do you have to stress over achievements.
Something I struggle with.

Games can be many things though? Fun is the obvious one, it can be something to socialise, think webfishing. They can be thought provoking, think What Remains of Edith Finch. They can be a test of pure willpower, think any souls game. They’re also capable of being fun, thought provoking, and any other such combination of human emotion. A game can be a chore AND fun, Powerwash Simulator, Destiny 2 and many others. Play what you enjoy.

That’s EXACTLY what got me to stop playing WoW years ago.

I just changed my difficulty level on Gran Turismo 7 to easy bc I was having trouble with some races. I felt like I was cheating at first, and then I remembered this sentiment.

But if we dont program planned absolence and timers into the game play, and then monetize the players time with paywalls, we wont make as much money? How could you!?

After a major burnout and changing careers, I made a hard rule to never again play a game that feels like work. One of the best mental health decisions I ever made.

The example of this that always stick in my mind is Fable 3. I only played it once when it came out, so I might have missed a more efficient way of doing it, but getting the “good” ending essentially required you to raise a shit-tonne of money whilst also staying on the right side of the game’s karma system (which meant turning down most of the easy sources of money).
I remember it being _days_ of grinding mini games to get enough money to buy houses that you then couldn’t raise the rent of. Absolutely killed the pace of the second half of the game.

They can even be extremely hard but can’t feel like a CHORE to do. Those damn fkn bonefires in first Dark Souls man… can’t even put one next to a boss so I have to run and run past all the enemies and one kilometre of way on every try, fuck that, thank god’s for manual saving and folder swapping.

I have been in this rut for YEARS. I always have a maxed gamepass sub due to boatload off ways to get it ultra cheap and I rarely play.
I tried atom fall and this is doing it for me.
It’s so chill…..and easy to get sucked into exploring.
I’m 40 now, and I love “old” this feels. I dont need to know endless game mechanics, bombarded with tutorials and have insane difficult AI needing instant reaction time for me to succeed.
Play atom fall.

Oh yeah OSRS is totally a fun game and not chore and gambling simulator. (Still love it dopamine is off the roof when you get a long grind done)

We’ll get at least two more posts today from people who want everyone to suggest a game that’s a chore that they can play for thousands of hours

Some people like “grinding.”
lol, when a game makes me work for “fake money”, I stop playing (multiplayer), or look for hacks/trainer (single player), etc. there are exceptions, but this is the general rule

Games can involve dull and tedious tasks too, and that’s not a bad thing. In games like EVE Online, it’s not always about the gameplay itself; sometimes it’s about managing your group, talking about policies, and handling real responsibilities. That makes the experience special even when the gameplay itself is boring.

I feel like the only games where this becomes a problem are the FOMO free-to-play wallet-drainers

Yep, so play it on story mode, be OP as much as you want too, the worlds too fucking grim to be anything but a superhero in game. If someone says you need to grind something, pull an Eggman and piss on the moon.
Outrageous_Eater
Probably an unpopular opinion but this was elden ring for me. I loved the worldbuilding and intricate setting, but dealing with the game just made me more anxious lol, when I wanted to relax after a long day
