I'm playing on an emulator, and as far as I know it doesn't mess with the shiny odds (1 in 8,192), but I'm just gonna tell myself it does mess with the odds, and it wouldn't have been a legit shiny catch anyways. Hopefully that will help me cope…

Reminds me of the time I found a shiny, false swiped it low and it used a move that did recoil damage before I could catch it.
The first shiny I ever encountered was a spoink. It also happened to be my first ever spoink I encountered. I assumed that’s what spoinks just look like so I beat it. Next spoink I saw had different colors than the first one so I freaked out thinking it was a shiny and caught it. When the realization hit I was devastated. This was over 20 years ago and I still get sad about that poor shiny spoink I absolutely obliterated

In Crystal, while surfing through the whirlpool islands where Luigi is, I always ran into a Tentacruel that had this sparkle effect. I hated it. I would even point it out to my brother. I ran into maybe 5 or 6 times.
I had no idea what a shiny was until after encountering the Red Gyarados

Sorry I never played a Pokémon game other than Pokémon sword for switch ( which I didn’t finish). I assume shynies are very rare Pokémons? Are they also in sword?
I remember first time i ever tried to shiny hunt was on pokemon soul silver , i remember i prepared food , some blankets and a couple tv shows to watch over the night when hunting , i got it in my 5th reset
Like it’d take a crazy amount of time but you could try shiny hunting now that you’ve got a taste of it.

My first shiny ever was a sandslash in crystal version I was very young and killed it not realizing.
I didn’t learn about Shinies until like 10-years later. I wonder how many Shinies I slayed without knowing?
With the DS games’ introduction of online trading I eventually collected an entire Shinidex of The first 500.
It was fun, I felt like a Pokemon Stock Trader. Finding out which trades were hot, and what level they needed to be at. It was almost like its own game!
My first ever was either in crystal or emerald, I can’t remember which game. But it was a brown Zubat, and I accidentally killed it. I was like 10 or 11 at the time and had no idea why it was brown lol

After that it took like a decade before seeing another shiny on a randomizer.
Then Pokémon arceus came out and I saw the most shinies I’ve ever seen in my life

I found out mine retroactively.
I remember I had Gold version and while leveling up mons in Mt Silver to take on Red, I encountered a purple Golduck with the shine. The shine I remembered from the lake of rage. Except I didn’t take what they wanted me to from it. I thought I had found another from Team Rockets plans and thought there would be another base to destroy. I couldn’t find it. I fought my way back to Lance and the game didn’t have me tell him about it. I just kind of dropped it and moved on.
Years later after skipping RS and PD I played Black and White. I found a website called Bulbapedia that let me know if I had caught everything on a route and while looking into the Conculdur (sp?) Line I noticed the website had a space for the pixel art… which showed one with a different color. Looking into where I could get the different color I found info on shineys, which explained their sparkle… and their rarity. I immediately thought of the Golduck and went to look into when shineys first started…
Oh man same thing happened to me about 15 years ago when I was playing Pokemon Silver on an emulator. One of the first encounters before getting my pokeballs was a shiny Rattata. The best part? Nobody believes me to this day, but hey it’ll definitely be a story for the kids 😂

How do you get caught without your balls?
The only time I was able to catch myself a shiny pokemon was in Scarlet and Violet when outbreaks happen. Before that game I never caught myself a shiny just running through grass and having a random encounter by chance.
