Game companies really knew their customers back then.

Back when game marketing had personality.

I still have the Lara Croft fold out poster

This is why nude mods are usually the first to get made after a game releases.

It’s fun seeing these ads when reading through old magazines but a lot of them are really cringy. Definitely of an era.

The “Nude raider” mod solved that issue for many people lol.

Adult mod creators will always find a way if possible.

I have a distinct feeling that this ad played a big part in kids getting their comics and zines’ taken away lol

I’m reading through a bunch of my old EGMs and Game Informers and it’s funny to see how aggressively horny they were.

I get that it was their audience but I swear the editors must have had a breast quota by how unnecessary some it it is lol

Back then, games were sold at much higher ‘margins’, and they could focus on niche markets and advertising

Today the cost and time it takes to make a game is so much higher while it’s sold at the same price as 20 years ago, so companies hedge their projects, everything needs to have mass appeal, which makes everything seem a bit bland

“A game for everyone is a game for no one”

Modders: “Don’t worry, we’ll take it from here.”

  12. Even back then, TR III and jaw dropping realism did not mix.

Marvel Rivals is basically doing this kind of marketing now and experiencing massive success because of it. It just can’t be as “on-the-nose” as it used to be.

  16. Did you see the Emma frost reveal for marvel rivals? Advertising to gaming gooners has not changed

  17. Responsible_Loss8246

This would have been scrubbed from the internet if this was put out today

Lara Croft’s Creator hated these ads btw

    > She was always designed to look good – people’s psychology is that they like attractive characters on both sexes. What I objected to was the marketing which represented Lara in a way that was nothing like the character. At the time I didn’t like that and it prompted me to want to retain control of characters I created in the future, so that’s why I left. Back then? Look at the skins they make for games now and yall gladly pay 30 bucks a pop for them

  20. I bought the first Lara Croft magazine back in 1999. 😀

  21. They knew how to laugh a bit too at their game, now you only see them laugh is when the new shiny thing makes loads of $ .
