This game looks & feels absolutely gorgeous. They knocked it out of the park. Really feels like more of a remake than a remaster. Like Bluepoints Shadow of the Colossus Remake.

Kudos to Bethesda for underselling a banger of a shadow drop. This bought them several more years for Elder Scrolls 6 from me.

Hopefully they'll do the same with the Fallout 3 "Remaster".

It feels like that because the graphics engine is completely new, and so the models and animations all had to be recreated. Not from scratch but they had to be redone. It’s basically an almost complete remake while keeping the old engine.

  2. dancrum

I would say the game *looks* like a remake, but it still *feels* like OG Oblivion, with sprint.

  3. def_tom

I haven’t played it yet, but from what I gather it kind of blurs the lines a bit.

  4. granitegumball

That’s because our standard for remasters is so low

  5. TomReneth

I don’t agree. The mechanical changes are not really substantial enough to be a full remake.

Nothing wrong with a Remaster though. Oblivion was always charmingly janky.

If I could make the slightest bit of noise, they maybe could have spent a little more time under the hood. The AI is still ass and if reports are right might actually be even rougher since there is more loading going on. It’s nothing gamebreaking so far and I am well used to Oblivion NPCs, but I wouldn’t mind a patch or two that smooths it out.

  7. Connor123x

should post that in the thread where they are saying the colour pallet is lifeless

  8. Cloud_N0ne

Only because they overhauled the visuals entirely in a new engine.

Everything below the surface is still the original game code, handled by the original Gambryo engine.

Isn’t it the OG Oblivion underneath some UE5 graphics?

  10. Thopterthallid

You get a bloodborne dodge at 25 acrobatics.

  11. No it doesn’t lol. It’s a remaster with unreal 5 slapped onto it.

  12. EverGreatestxX

From what I understand, the reason it isn’t a remake is because the game was kept mostly the same. The only thing really remade were the graphics/textures and the UI.

  13. I wouldnt go that far. Its definitely more like a remaster than a remake, and you can absolutely tell it was done by a different team than the one that made the original.

  14. DeWitt-Yesil

Calling it a Remake would suggest that TES 6 will have Gameplay on similar level!

    FF7 Remake (2020) is a “remake”.

Dead Space (2023) is a “remake”.

    Persona 3 Reload (2024) is a “remake”.

Those games were completely “remade” from the ground up.

Oblivion Remastered is not “remade” from the ground up. It took the original game that ran on the Gamebryo engine, made some great quality of life tweaks, and used Unreal Engine 5 for the graphics. It did not remake the game.

Remaster and Remake is not synonymous, it colossally undermines the effort it takes to make an entirely new game.

It’s a new coat of paint. It looks great but the game is almost identical in terms of everything else. If the scripting or level design was different, I’d say it’s a remake but it’s just a really well done remaster.

    Hot take, there OP

    It’s not a remake or a remaster.

    It’s a remasterpiece

  18. Clint1027

This is def a test to see if they want to put the money into a Skyrim remaster.

  19. vashy96

One of our italian community defined it “Remastered+”, which is much more than a Remasered (like TLOU2) but a bit less than a Remake (like RE2)

I’d love if fallout 3 remake had destructible environments to a degree. I don’t know if they’ll go that far though

  21. Except of course you still see the bandit in glass armor destroy you because you sneak and jumped power levelled, but they’ll look better!

  22. Zi0nized

The update to the level system alone makes it a big win for me. On the OG it was so painful to have to keep track of the skills you leveled up.

  23. ahack13

Its kinda halfway point. Because its all new assets and there are some gameplay changes. But for the most part the gameplay is exactly the same and most of the voicelines are the original.

  24. bluedeer10

The line between remaster or remake has always been grey.

I’m more of the opinion it’s a remaster.

  25. Mr_Jackabin

It’s not a remake because it’s still running g the actual game underneath. But calling it just a remaster is an insult too. It’s a weird one

  26. Peopleare confused because of visual flare, but forget that skeleton is same as oblivion with some changes for combat, leveling etc. It did basically ehat demons souls did, take skeleton of ps3 version and put prettier visuals on them

  27. ChefArtorias

Remake means they changed in game mechanics/systems. Sure there are some minor changes but I wouldn’t call this a remake at all.

  28. Apollonistas

It definetely is OG Oblivion with a new awesome coat of paint. Quite remarkable actually. But i spent hundreds of hours back in the day so it still feels old to me. Good thing for new player though.

  29. Crimzennnn

It feels exactly like old oblivion bro.

  30. yotothyo

Visually, it IS a total remake. Every single asset was rebuilt from scratch.

  31. nelflyn

I’m quite sure they call it Remaster to “undersell” it. It fits the marketing of the game as well, though I also see why calling it remake would be a bit much. It’s really an in between kinda thing. Though if it was led by a hype campaign, you can absolutely believe they would have called it remade.

  32. SaeedDitman

Is it really worth buying again? I can’t trust the Bethesda glazers

  33. fishboy3339

A remake to me is about recreating the game and adding new features and story.
Resident evil 4 I think is a good example of a remake. Took the core gameplay and added to the story and features.

A remaster is taking an old game and making it modern without changing the core game.

I’m absolutely loving it but I think remaster is an appropriate title.

  34. N7Diesel

Until you play it or see it move and then it reminds you VERY clearly that it’s a 20 year old game.

  35. incoherentjedi

It does not feel like a remake, but it sure does look like one.

  36. From what I’ve played they have virtually improved on everything I hated about Oblivion. It is genuinely a gorgeous game whereas 2005 Oblivion already looked dated and washed out.

  37. nowhereright

*sigh*. No it doesn’t. It looks great. It feels exactly like Oblivion with some minor changes because it is literally Oblivion.

The endless release of bullshit “remasters” the last several years has really warped peoples understanding of the differences between remasters and remakes.

Remasters: Spyro, Crash, Destroy All Humans, Oblivion.

Remakes: Various Resident Evils, Finally Fantasy 7, Dead Space.

The Oblivion remaster is basically a modded Oblivion with an unreal coat of paint over it.

  38. brett1081

I keep hearing this alot. But the scaling issue with enemies and the world is unchanged. And the character movement and attacking actions are better but not great. And there isn’t that big a change to the base fundamentals. It’s definitely not a full remake. Compare this to what SE did with FF7 and it’s not close.

  39. keyrodi

Nah, no it’s not. It’s very much still the old Oblivion running underneath. A pretty coat of paint doesn’t transcend the game.
