Probably by Chad from Accounting who thinks his MacBook Pro has a nuclear reactor inside because it has a glowing Apple on it.
Meanwhile, desktops are out here bench pressing RTX 5090s and casually curing cancer with Folding@home.

A lot of people actually. People generally think more $ equals more better so they see a $2k laptop and a $1k desktop and think the laptop is more powerful. Most people don’t know the first thing about specs
Constant-Recipe-9850
Unfortunately that’s quite a lot of people.
Honestly most regular consumers actually think that they’re getting the same desktop GPU is the laptop because of the naming.
I mean that’s why they name it like that obviously and it does work.

Desktop simply has higher ceiling for thermal. Hence more room for performance. It’s where x86 can breath and shine.
Running_Oakley
I’ve been told you can dedicate more ram to a laptop GPU and that magically makes it faster and better than a normal GPU, so this is what we’re dealing with.

I’m not sure people think laptops are more powerful per se, but having worked in IT for many years, I can tell you that most people think they are at least just as good without any compromises. It can be a challenge talking people out of buying laptops even when they plan to have it stationary for its entire lifetime

I’ve actually seen people that their 3050ti laptop GPU was better than a 7800xt, 7900xt and a 4070. All 3 being desktop GPUs.
He kept telling me to look up benchmarks. It was fascinating.

It’s a shitty question, containing words like “generally”. The question is wrong.

At best people are ignorant to the deficiencies of laptops and think they will get equal performance, I’ve never heard anyone say that laptops are better

The electricity bill and power consumption ratio of laptop and desktop is the thing I respect.

Most normal consumers assume that a mobile GPU is equivalent to its full fledged desktop counterpart. I’ve had to explain to quite a number of people that the mobile GPU is *always* weaker than the desktop part regardless of the name. A 4090 mobile ≠ 4090 desktop, people. A “4090 mobile” is just that generation’s best mobile GPU in that tier/generation of mobile GPUs.

well maybe true if you are looking at compute per cubic meter, but if you want that get multi-socket epyc blade servers in a rack

Depends on the metric. If in terms of power efficiency that is to say computing power / watts, then it can be true. If you get like 5 100 watt laptop you might get more total computing performance than 1 500 watt PC.
But in terms of total computing power as a whole this is just false. More watts = more computing power assuming same or comparable architecture. a 100 watt laptop will never beat a 1000 watt PC if they have comparable architecture.
Archon-Toten
If either one is more powerful you are not comparing apples to apples. Get both with identical hardware and they should perform the same, untill the laptop overheats and slows down to prevent meltdown.

Cooling systems and space are one thing, but most importantly laptops have to worry a lot more about power consumption.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with my supervisor at my old job. Not only was he in charge of my department, but he was also the pseudo-IT guy for our company. He basically dealt with installing more ram and setting up new computers. A real IT company dealt with our servers and network. Naturally, I assumed my supervisor had some knowledge of computers. Nope.
I had just built a new system with an AMD 3800x, RTX 2080 super, and 64GB of ram. Not the most powerful system ever, but it was pretty stout for the time. He claimed his 2 year old HP laptop was more powerful than my new PC because his laptop had an i7… yeah… I thought he was kidding, so I laughed. It wasn’t a joke. He then tried to explain to me that his i7 powered laptop was really expensive, so it’s definitely more powerful than my desktop that doesn’t have an i7 cpu.
