Once I have the money…

21 years of free use, with no privacy and security scandals, and a one-off license instead of subscription? I’d say pay it!

I honestly don’t get why people are still installing winrar. Windows has native rar and 7zip support now and there are completely free (as in not trialware) alternatives if you must have an archiver installed.

  3. 7zip or nanazip. Both free. Both open source(?)

I actually bought this a few years ago. I emailed asking about licenses cause it seemed to imply it was ‘Per Computer’. He said ‘Nah for personal use put it on as many PCs in your home as you want. Here’s a 20% discount code’.

So after 20+ years, I now have it paid.

There are very few programs I’ve paid for that I’d say deserved my money, WinRAR is one of them. I know I never needed to pay them, and that’s why they deserved my money.

We have to support the good devs, or all we’ll get is the bad.

I bought it when i was blessed with insurance payout for work related injury. Activation process is so dumb.

    What the hell happened!?😂

Windows has rar and zip file extraction already built in nowadays. But 7zip will always be the free service goat.

Just use peazip people it’s open source and opens every type of archive

I ran into a little bit of money when my uncle passed – i spent 2-300$ paying for apps like this

  12. AbleBonus9752

Bought it last week because I was finally getting sick to death of the pop-ups. Worth it though as I’m also supporting the Devs for keeping winrar how it was for so long

  13. TheLaughingMannofRed

I just went over to 7-Zip myself and haven’t looked back.

However, if there’s anything newer and better that is also open source (and free, no ads), I’m open to trying.

I have no idea how they are in business still. Maybe they make a chunk from corporations who are forced/have to buy it? Good for them, though. One of the OG apps from the origin of the Internet. Many apps have come and gone, but WinRAR has stayed put.

  15. One day i will do the right thing and buy it.

  16. i know this isnt the point of the post and me saying this is promoting me to pirate from the free..
but if u just google ” winrar activator github” u can just run a script and it activates it for you (it is literally copy pasting one single line, into powershell or CMD and pressing enter and you’re done)

might or might not have done that and have no issues or pop ups.

Imagine if this was owned by Adobe

As far as I know they actually don’t care about private users and companies bring in enough money to keep them going. Which, if true, is an awesome way of doing things.

  19. Zorcky-2C

It’s just the type of license (don’t know the exact license’s acronym).

Basically it’s free for the users, but companies who use the program have to buy the license

  20. itsapotatosalad

WinRAR is not a free software

  21. winrar is very passé, I don’t see any benefit from it over 7z

OSes these days are also able to open most zipped archives in their file navigation program without any problem too

  22. MisterBaku

Or…. just use something like 7-Zip that’s free and runs better..

  23. RoastedBeaf

Indeed its not free. But the trail is infinite. As long as you aren’t with a company that is meant to use it. There are definitely better alternatives nowadays than WinRAR. It’s just that WinRAR is the defacto compressor and decompress tool. And it’s essentially nagware. If you are on phone I can see why you want it. Otherwise it’s just easier to use either microsofts or 7zip

  24. DoubleRNL

Why is winrar better than 7zip for example??

  25. 0riginal-Syn

I bought it after using it for free for a good while a few decades ago. I just felt they deserved it. I haven’t used Windows for a long time now and don’t really need the Linux version, but I have a lot of respect for them.

  26. Just use 7zip guys, it’s open source, faster and free.

  27. Felinomancy

I bought WinRAR. I even made a thread in this sub to advertise the fact.

And I have no regrets. At that time I was financially comfortable, and I’ve been using WinRAR for years. I see no problem with rewarding an obviously excellent piece of software.

WinZip, now, that’s something **not** worth supporting.
