Well the method definitely works with dental floss and an iron. Just lifts right off. Had the iron set to between wool and cotton a bit on the cotton side.
Nice, a good and safe way of doing it I suppose, can you clean off the remaining solder between the chips and IHS without LM?
Tyr_Kukulkan
This is the funniest delid method I’ve ever seen.

I was told Steam was for games.

Careful, mate—keep that up and the iron’ll ask for a smoko.
Im joking I’m assuming your Aussie from the Target Essentials.
Dark_Fox_666
interesting just to be sure with this method i would say you could add a little multimeter with a thermocouple probe to check the temperature

This is the scariest photo I have seen for today.

Did you need to have thermal paste applied to the CPU?

Just remember not to use it as an iron until all that paste is gone. (I can imagine trying to completely wipe it away will be a nightmare..)
catdadando
They had to solder it there to start with too.

Can I ask what is the reason for doing this? I’ve seen a few now and don’t understand why folks are doing it. Is the CPU damaged already and this is an attempt to repair or is it just to see the inside?Â

Either your wife or your mom are gonna kill you lol

I had to google the reason for it, I’m sort of new. That’s interesting stuff. I can’t picture the liquid metal step, but I’m tempted to try this on my i7-9700F I don’t use anymore, just for shits. Gonna watch that vid you shared

OP really took the lid of this one.

This needs an NSFMR tag.

Holy shit that’s amazing.
Now how do you cool it? Regular paste/pad and regular cooler? How do you know how much to tighten the cooler?

That’s how I reballed my dead gpu. It’s a good method. I wrapped the card in tinfoil, only leaving the gpu itself uncovered and then I ironed it for a few minutes and It was as good as new, lasted for another 4 years.

Omg it’s malted

A warning to people who want to try this. Make sure to not overheat it, and make sure that the heat is evenly applied so that it doesn’t crack the silicon dies. For cleaning the remaining solder I’d recommend applying low melt solder then use desoldering braid to wick it off. The last bit you can scrape or polish off. It’s risky if you can’t control the temperature precisely.

Some pcbs can warp from cooling down too quickly, keep that in mind when you follow this at home.
