Im maybe late but I was today years old when I learned that! Also funny that you save money when you choose a linux distro over windows πŸ˜…

What’s funny about that? Windows is a paid OS, Linux is free. Linux laptops have always been cheaper.

  2. LSD_Ninja

I wouldn’t have thought Lenovo was paying 211 for Windows licences, not in the quantities they buy them in…

  3. I’d choose Linux and just install windows and grab a key for 5$

  4. shadowds

I’m surprised no one asking why Lenovo charging $211 for windows 11 home OEM, where companies buy bulk OEM keys for couple bucks, which get sold on gray market for $20+.

  5. Patatus_Maximus

How is the price for windows 11 home $211 ? I just checked the official MS web site and a windows 11 home key cost 145€ (approx $164). I thought they would get much cheaper keys, not more expensives.

Edit : it’s probably canadian dollars, not US

  6. GladiusNL

So even if you want windows, ship with linux and install windows yourself

  7. jim_lake4598

Lenovo would be the one to ship Linux as an option if anyone. The entire archlinux community glazes thinkpads

  8. CentralCypher

Man I fuckin HOPE this trickles down into all laptops. Imagine saving $211 just by plugging in a usb stick and using a $2 key.

  9. PtitCrissG

The more expensive windows is, the more you save by choosing a linux distro πŸ€·πŸ˜…

  10. kulingames

i would rather get one with fedora, install win 11, use activator script and buy winrar

  11. Laughing_Orange

What currency is that? 200 USD would be a crazy discount. Lenovo pays nowhere near 100 USD for the license, and through automation, a single person can install Windows on thousands of computers a day.

I grabbed a thinkpad x1 3 years ago with Fedora on it. It’s my main productivity station on the go. Super stable, no issues at all πŸ™‚ Haven’t run into any software where I needed windows for any reason.

Why was I the first one to post this. Reddit you disappoint me

  14. Rain_Zeros

I was gonna say, well Linux is free, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a copy of windows 11 home go $200+

  15. mr_gooses_uncle

Unfortunately, it’s a modern Lenovo machine, so no discount makes it worth buying.

Their quality has gone to shit.

  16. Damn I’d just choose Linux and install W11 the free way.

  17. Electric-Mountain

That’s actually a really good way to save some money so you can run windows if you want.

  18. daniluvsuall

Lenovo has always been a strong supporter of Linux.

Dell ship some of their laptops with Ubuntu I believe.

  19. Key-Moment6797

any reason to chiose Fedora over Ubuntu?

  20. Alarmed-Artichoke-44

Windows home costs $211? That’s insane

  21. Waffensmile

Chose Fedora then complain to store support that you didn’t get your hat, m’lady.

  22. MannyGoldstein

I like red hat but id take apt over dnf/yum as a newb

  23. darkbloo64

I know this post is mostly about the absurdity of $200+ for a Windows license, but I want to chime in and say Fedora is by far the smoothest Linux experience I’ve had. I’m dual-booting, but it was Fedora that figured out my displays without issue and Windows that needed me to set resolutions and refresh rates.

  24. AverageGlobeEnjoyer

Nice, I always wanted such a hat

  25. I_JuanTM

Holy, over $200 for Windows?!! That is insane lol. You can just activate it for free or buy a key online for like $5… So I’d even just choose one of the Linux options and then install Windows myself from a USB. You could then also immediately install a debloated version.

  26. sammyhjax123

As someone who’s never used windows. Yall are paying 211$!?!? I thought it was like 20$ for a key what the fuck

  27. Wikadood

Fun fact: airport X-rays run on fedora linux(a very old version of it)

  28. TsuDhoNimh2

It’s a lot faster to install Linux.

With Windows you have to track the licensing codes.

  29. I wonder why they even require you to choose an OS? I was helping a friend a few months ago and I tried configuring a few Lenovo ones to fit the budget.

I could save €100 on all of them by removing Windows.

Must be some EU vs NA thing.

  30. lykosen11

Imagine paying 211 usd for windows lol
    Actual scam

  31. sabin1981

So basically this is a way to immediately knock $211 off the purchase price? You’d buy the Fedora version then simply install Win11 activator πŸ˜‚

  32. bingbongb00gal00

What I find really wild is the $211 they’re charging for a win11 home licence!

  33. Shajirr

Considering that Lenovo get these licenses for super-cheap, most of this is just pure profit at the expense of people preferring to pay 200$ instead of spending like an hour to install OS themselves and paying 5$ or nothing
