Just got two IKEA Alex drawers and one Karlby tabletop, and I tought it would not move due to the heaviness of the top of the board. How do you secure it?

Sorry for the mess it's still under construction⚠️

The Alex drawers should each have 4 holes in the top so you can screw them in. Might need to remove the top 1 or 2 drawers to get to them

the aleks comes with big bolts you screw into the table top. there are pre-drilled holes in the top of the aleks and you’ll have to make pilot holes into the table top

    Whisper affirmations to it everyday

Just put those thin kitchen rubber mats under the tabletop. No need for drilling

  5. I just used gorilla mats, comes in a roll, just a rubbery kinda grippy mat, cut to size on the Alex tops. Mine don’t budge just didn’t have to drill any holes.

I have the exact same setup (black drawers instead of white) and it just sits on top. Doesn’t really move. I’ve had it this way for years without issue

Edit: I also have my PC on my desk which I suppose helps weigh it down

You could put some VHB tape on the top of the drawers if you’re worried about it. You probably won’t get it off without ruining the finish of whatever it’s applied to fyi.

Use a silicone cooking mat or rubber door stoppers.

  9. I got this idea from JayzTwoCents, and I personally like it. Because the countertop sits pretty low on the drawers, you can add furniture legs upside down to the top of the drawers and get some nice additional uplift and space. Seems really sturdy from my everyday use, and you could theoretically screw the legs into them for additional support.

I used 3M VHB tape on my Karlby + Ikea Alex Drawer setup and it has been great the last ~3 years. I only put tape on the corners, so minimal amount of tape was used.

  11. Nice desk – this is exactly the sort of thing I want when I move house. How much did it cost?

  12. Morall_tach

I put screws up into the desktop from the underside.

  13. jhingadong

Just screw a screw in from under on both sides. Make sure the screw isn’t longer then the thickness of the desktop. If you don’t have power tools then get a pack of 3m thingy things and your good to go. Everyone else is probably right but I’d never leave anything with any thing on it unsecured.

  14. I don’t. I just have it against the wall and always place something between the drawers and wall, and do the same for the tabletop. That’s how you get consistent gap between them and the wall and the tabletop won’t be moving no matter how I push it. For example currently I have Lego DUPLO pieces double taped between the top and wall. Works pretty well and won’t crush your cables.

Just use some gorilla grip anti skid squares. Probably can find them at any retailer.

  16. sturdybutter

Exactly as you have. If you’re genuinely concerned put some VHB on the top corners of the drawer units. But only do this if you DO NOT care about the finish on top of the drawers or under the desk.

My tabletop is wedged in between 2 walls, it’s not going anywhere

Command strips are super easy and secure. You can remove it if you really have to, but it would never shift unless you really really wanted it to.

  19. JT_Ricochet

I got double sided command strips that don’t hurt the table or the cabinets, if it’s crooked just re apply.

  20. Hotboi_yata

I mounted my piece of tree to the wall.

  21. Dismal_Scientist_468

I always thought they just sat on the drawers.

  22. digitalbeef

No real need to secure it, I have some carpet pads under to prevent sliding. Consider adding a center leg or reinforcement strut to prevent bowing–I thought mine would be fine without one but after 2-3 years it was significantly warped.

  23. themoo-12

You should add a leg to the middle of the top at the back. It will help stabilize it and keep it from sagging long term. IKEA makes one for like $10 that’s adjustable and work great!

  24. farkwadian

A couple strips of double sided tape on each side where the table meets the drawers. It’ll provide enough friction for your needs.

  25. I drilled four L – shaped brackets on the inside at the back where I can’t see them 👀

  26. Have same desk, I drilled up through the drawers to secure it. At least with my set the panels had drill holes to use, but as others have said, it ain’t necessary with the right bits.

  27. MIGHT_CONTAIN_NUTS

Those drawers have provisions to attach to the table top built in. The holes to drill are marked inside the top of the drawer assembly
