Thought you guys might like this, hacked/threw together this Optiplex build with the goal of making the cheapest gaming build I have attempted yet.
Picked up a Marketplace Optiplex 9020 MT with a 4790 + 16 GB DDR3 ($40) and an eBay RX560 4GB with a bad fan (28.38 incl shipping). I also bought an Amazon 256GB SSD ($19.07). Utilized an old case fan, some zip ties, and a wifi card I had lying around.
The RX560 I deshrouded before soldering an old 2 pin molex case fan to the mini 4 pin cable. I then ziptied the fan to the heat sink – very quiet and temps barely get above 60-70C under stress w/ OC.
I also assembled this whole thing while a bit inebriated, great drinking activity 😂.

Been playing around with settings and games. All in all this thing is HILARIOUS, and performs way better than it has any business doing.

Everything is 1080p, but here’s the performance I’ve been getting so far:
Valorant hits 150-200 fps on default mid settings, very smooth. Will have to blame being bad on something else.
Siege at 100% scaling low settings with medium shadows benchmarks around 75 fps, which is consistent with gameplay. Also very smooth. Can boost fps tweaking settings but honestly I have not felt the need to, and I’m legitimately playing with this setup.
Just Cause 4 on medium settings was getting around 30-40 fps. I know some people would have a stroke at that but it’s consistent and stable, very very playable.
….
I very minimally tested some Fortnite, seems playable but was a little choppy, I believe it takes a few games for all the caches to be loaded up.
Also tried the beginning of Alien Isolation. I don’t have metrics, but felt similar to JC4, likely 30-50 fps but stable.
I see it better as an ultra budget home media server.
EBT PC 😎
That is awesome! Looks super clean, thought it was factory till I read the post.. clearly you’re less inebriated than the dudes at Dell🤣
Love the old heat spreaders on the ram and no RGB insight! Perfection.
Love the case fan mods. I’ve done similar with GPUs whos fans died.

did something similar with a Optiplex, just went a little overboard with it by adding a Titan xp lol
Sweet.
Perfect. Great value. Really underrated hardware
Should be an easy locked 60fps dx12 vsync medium in Fortnite. Probably about 80fpa unlimited fps with stutter. Never does great unlimited fps. But performance mode could do 120. I’ve had a few 4th gen i7 including one with a 1050ti right now.
What games do you plan to play? Candy crush?
Rear fan should be the other way round.
That’s actually pretty impressive for 87$
That’s DELL Optiplex case, from 2011 I suppose.
This goes hard
