Since everyone else has already given you what’s its purpose, I’ll just tell you how it works irl. Missiles that are used to destroy aircrafts have a built in mechanism to follow the point that has the highest temperature with the help of its thermal sensors which locks itself onto the thrusters of the aircraft. So multiple small flairs are released from the aircraft which confuses the detection mechanism and makes the missile follow the flairs instead of the aircraft.
