It’s like schrodingers’ phenomena. It has a mind of it’s own.
These panels can survive disasters sent from God himself or break into a million pieces if you decide to look at it the wrong way once.
I always see posts with the broken glass. I never see explanations telling how the glass broke.
I guess in most cases they did something stupid and feel embarrassed.
Took off the glass about 2.5 years ago when I got the vertical GPU mount.
Its still in my closet with the plastic on it lmao
Real answer is that properties of engineered materials can be quirky and unintuitive at times.
Thats how you end up with something that can survive significant impacts on one side seemingly randomly explode as soon as the edge so much as touches a ceramic tile.
These panels are very predictable, i throw mine across the room all the time when working on my pc and have seen them survive even a hammer impact.
They are just also extremely susceptible to a few very specific scenarios that people wouldnt expect (most noticably edge or corner on ceramic or certain types of stone, even if very little force is involved)
Car windows have the edges of the glass panel protected at all times and nobody takes windshields off to clean their Vin number while holding it in their non dominant hand over a tile driveway
My wife parked her car under a nut tree. A golf ball sized nut fell and hit the edge of the back window and it shattered into a million pieces. Pro tip: never place your pc under a nut tree.
I don’t know man mine feels very fragile. I haven’t been able to break it thus far but that’s because I’ve always been super careful with it.
Tempered glass is incredibly hard, unless you touch it with ceramic, which is what tile floors are made off.
Hence why you can break in or out of a car window by tapping it with an old broken sparkplug.
Car window glass is quite easy to break in much the same way side panel glass is easy to break. Hit it against hard ceramic and it’ll explode, so a tile floor, or more often with cars a broken sparkplug flicked at the window.
Have you ever seen videos of people shattering car windows with “ninja rocks”? A significant amount of people have floors made of the same material as those “ninja rocks”. That’s how.
Playing VR I hit my O11XL often, my fleshy knuckles are often bloody, and my index knuckles are scuffed but the panel never even flinched.

I dropped my side panel when I was in a rush while the movers were at my apartment. Shattered. I dropped it from literally 1 inch, but onto my glass desk. Glass on glass = bad, I guess.
I’ve had my Fractal Design Define S2 for years, I think it was roughly when that case came out give or take and I’ve never once broken the glass side panel, and I’ve taken it off quite a few times
Ceramic tiles. Throw a piece of spark plug ceramic at a window and it’ll shatter.
Mine broke spontaneously. As in, it was intact when we left the house. Broken when we got back. Door to the room was closed, PC was off.
I’m not rushing to conclusions, but 99% of the time it’s on tile.
So we done know why this keeps happening.
People tighten the screws too tight and don’t lift and gently put it down on a tiled floor. Basic common sense that most redditors lack.
Gingerly set down the side panel on a dolomite countertop thoughtlessly and it instantly shattered. Lesson learned here, but feel free to doubt all you want lol
Im more shocked by the fact so many people manage to get fluids into their PCs. Some even multiple times. I mean. How?
I learned this lesson was I was in my first apartment and was assembling a cabinet with a giant glass front panel, prob 5 feet tall and 18 inches wide. As I was assembling it, the side gently kissed my tile floor and it disintegrated in my hands.
The pieces went everywhere. It was a horror show.
Just makes you think ‘probably its not in its correct application if this keeps happening’?

If something harder than tempered glass touched it then it spontaneously explodes. It’s also sensitive to damage on the edges. You’ll notice a lot of those blown up case windows have tile floors nearby, which is pretty coherent as tile doesn’t absorb much of the impact and also happens to be harder than glass which will maximize the chances of breakage.
They get broken because people don’t read their manuals and ignore the warnings on their cases boxes and the warning stickers on the glass itself.
