But seriously, it is kind of disappointing. Mostly because there’s hardly any modern, photorealistic games that are “worth” the power it takes to run them. Art style is much more important. Look at Elden Ring, for instance. Even the lowly 3050 and 1660-Ti could run 60fps at max graphics, and it didn’t need ray tracing or a complicated physics engine to be incredible. I remember after a few hours of gameplay, I noticed that my character’s cape was clipping through Torrent when I was riding. I remember thinking “huh, I guess the physics isn’t that complicated” and then never paying attention to it again, because the art style of the game made it look good. I’m playing through Titanfall 2 again right now, and again, it looks fantastic. It’s not high-res textures, sure, it could run on my old Xbox 1 just fine. But the art style is great, and the gameplay is top-tier. That’s what makes a good game.
AI is just a tool to compensate for the demand to high frame rates and ultra graphics when the tech (both GPUs and game engines) is not keeping up. We’d all be much better off if gamers and studios prioritized making games that look GOOD, rather than realistic.

Yeah sure.
Here’s a comparison of “essential pixels” vs “temporary performance” that allows us to get much better graphics.
^(Full RT at 4K DLSS Balanced vs RT OFF at native 4K:)
Feel free to tell us which makes you a bigger difference.

This greedy MFer can’t even give gamers 12gb Vram for under $400! Next this 🤡 is going to tell us the 5080 is will cost $2k for our benefit because it will help fund the new AI gpus!

The recent stats from Sony that say 75% of people opt for Performance mode, and that’s on console, and one assumes mostly first party. On PC we live in an era where most of the highest settings take careful comparison and pixel peeping, and there’s a huge performance hit for minimal difference, but it still feels cheapened if I spent near a grand on a video card but I still only get Very High with Ultra right there. Going for better art direction is the key, but that’s not easy, that takes both actual talent and good management. Some level of AI refinement is great because it’s all an estimation and a bunch of layered tricks anyways (and DLSS tops native in many scenarios), but realize that without good pre-production, design, proper scope, and rounds of testing, you end up with Concord.

Nah thanks, I’ll take the extra performance. Life’s too short to play at shitty frame rates.

I dunno, I’m all for embracing DLSS, DLAA, DLDSR, Ray Reconstruction, that fancy ultra fast loading tech Nvidia cooked up, RTX Remix, etc. That’s pretty good AI shit for graphics innit.

AI upscaling is fine, I guess. I mostly play Factorio anyway.
