The developer of Palworld has revealed a conundrum it faces as it looks to the future: take the game free-to-play and live service, or stick with its current pay-to-play model.

you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the very thing you were against
Sharktoothdecay
live service will kill it but good
HRudy94
Pay to play.
I don’t want to see the game die.
rjmacready
Live service gaming is a plague that needs eradication.
Tu4dFurges0n
Isn’t that the choice every game has to make?
NydoXC
Conundrum? Finish the game and the people that will buy it, will buy it. Then move on and create a new game. Conundrum he says. The conundrum is greed.
lolinpopsicle
How about you get the game done and out of early access and see how that plays out. I know it has great reviews but I want to play a completed game; as do many others.
Still lots of us looking to buy once you actually finish it.
Live service will literally turn me off from buying.
korey1337
Can see nothing but bad coming from that change.

Man, I miss the days when you bought software once and got to use it for theoretically ever.

Finish the fuckin game and then you can release paid dlc. The cart has been coming way before the horse lately and it’s tiresome. I like palworld! But I played it for “free” on gamepass, had my fun, and moved on because it’s a buggy mess that crashes all the time when I play with just 1 other person.
That may be the console version that is more unstable but… it doesn’t leave a good impression that it’s a finished game worth sinking 100s of hours in if I’m going to constantly lose progress or deal with annoying bugs that tarnish the experience.
Also, this is a personal thing but I know I’m not alone in it… all survival and crafting games need to reel it the fuck in on how grindy they are from the rip. Lower the amount of every single material for every single recipe. There is no good reason to waste my time like all these games seem designed from the ground up to do. I understand that’s the genre and I get it but it’s gotten really old and Palworld is a big reason I stopped wanting to play these types of games generally because the grind felt so unrewarding.
Brynjir
They probably should of thought about that BEFORE launching the game, I paid for a full game if they turn it into an MMO I would want a full refund not just some pointless in game crap they would probably offer as “compensation”.
Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop
God damnit, I really enjoy Palworld and I really hope they don’t move to live service.
BaronVonBubbleh
Still waiting for GameFreak to get really shaken up over this game. I was told it’ll FORCE them to make changes or something, lmfao.
Spongegrunt
Wow, what a tough choice. Dead game or free to play. I wonder what he’s gonna choose.
Kitakitakita
how about getting the game out of pre-alpha first. The only reason this is a question is because they chose to run their own servers
Nexxus88
Saw this game being a flash in the pan, guess that settles it.
ImmaculateWeiss
The meme factor could only keep this going as is for so long, I’m not surprised they’ve hit a wall tbh
Number-Thirteen
This is how you ruin a game. It’s not like the company didn’t many major cash when it was released.
papachabre
I bought the game because I want the full damned game, not some loot in a F2P game. I wouldn’t have paid for it if I knew this was the direction it was going.
cwaterbottom
On one hand this makes me feel bad for waiting to buy it, on the other hand now instead of waiting for it to leave EA I’m waiting to see if I’m going to drop a bunch of money on a game that’s going to go FTP afterwards.
kuriboharmy
Is the game online only?
SleepyGeist
The only conundrum here is greed. Finish the game, people will buy it, make expansions, people will buy them, make a new game after that, people will buy them.
yana_kosaka
Can it really go free-to-play when millions have already bought it?? I mean, I guess if they gave paid players some DLC content or something in exchange for what they paid, but I’m not really sure if it’s a good idea?
Zylpherenuis
GSAS sucks. If the Devs insisted on making it a GSAS it’s a game not for me. Ultimately it should be a product first and foremost. I dislike games having more Price sink in it like MMORPGS Final Fantasy XIV/World Of Warcraft and others.
If the Devs insist on pushing for profits. Enrich the game ultimately that would turn it into a Single Player Package that is complete along with a P2P playability with friends and be done with that. I would happily pay $50 for the game right off the bat if it has a full amount of experince within the game that offers $ to Hours.
Not a service that nickel and dime for constantly playing because fuck that shit.
Werthy71
Personally, I am perfectly happy with what was in the game for the 36$ I spent on it, and that isn’t even with the new island update. I would happily pay 5-20$ every 6 months for a new island, 20 new pals/variants, a new boss, 5 level cap increase, base items/textures, and a couple other small things.
Etna-
Game wont leave early access just like their other games
hshnslsh
Could they roll out a small subscription and then work out a deal with gamepass so ultimate tier gets the palworld sub too
ryan8954
Kinda wish they’d bring this to ps5
thejoshfoote
This is so dumb…. Just charge a subscription to play on dedicated servers. Problem solved. Less upkeep. Force servers to merge and have a minimum capacity so ur not wasting more money.
Then release the full game and polish it. Sell more copies and put in some random skins or apparel for cash. But nothing that affects gameplay.
All of a sudden u have a live service game with no monetization on gameplay. U get extra cash from skins and subs to dedicated servers which then pay for themselves and in turn allow you to have more money as “profit”
polskiftw
He already made the decision and is trying to soften the blow.
NSEVMTG
They already have a contentious reputation in the industry. Abandoning previous projects and ripping assets from Pokemon, although not the worst ways devs have treated players, it’s still enough to where they’re on thin-ice as a smaller studio.
Swapping from the current system to some live service bullshit would immediately cause a backlash not unlike the Helldivers 2 fiasco. Changing the monetization is a huge shift and would make me feel like I was robbed. I doubt Steam would issue refunds this far out, but there would be hella requests.
