You can still use them. My mouse broke a few years ago so I used a old ball mice for a while. I actually liked it. I prefer wireless and more buttons though, but otherwise I would cladly use one.

Had the Microsoft Mouse with the ball – classic device. The mouse click was perfect. I can feel it now.
