Some of the other ones look a little goofy to me but that could also just be because they are concept. The clown mask is goofy too don’t get me wrong
Yeah, I just think upper studio management are like ultra-vanilla people and decided to play it safe and go for the most overused and cliche design of a murder-clown possible as they just thought people wouldn’t vibe with the rest.
I guess it also sorta thematically fits since (I’m not creating a spoiler for this, the game’s ancient history at this point, you’ll survive a spoiler to a walking simulator) the “psycho” maniac turned out to kinda be the least of the problems and all-around just a traitor within the group. Like if you think about it in a way where “he’s just such a dork he couldn’t even come up with any original idea for a mask so he just chose a murder clown, what a poser!”, it makes sense.
Either way, it definitely wasn’t chosen based on the fear factor. That is for certain.
The fourth from the left on the first, third and fourth rows are pretty creepy to me.

Y’know D2/ row 4 column 2 would have been interesting to see. I feel like the Native Americans in the game aren’t that prominent. Aside from the mention of their mountain being taken over, their curse being present, and the premonition totems, they kinda just fade out of game. Thinking about it now, I would have loved to see this character’s mask have a touch of the native feel to it. Plus it just makes sense for this person to be uncaring and use Native American culture as a way to… you know be psychotic.
After quickly fact checking, I’ve read that the only mentions of the natives after the beginning of the game are tied to the Stranger’s notes.
One of my biggest disappointments with this game when it comes to the psycho is that [SPOILER] >!there was never any real danger. The Wendigo twist was cool, sure, but the psycho never being a real threat really lowers the stakes on replays!<. In fact, that’s also a problem in other games from Supermassive.
Honestly I’m more upset that you go through answering all of these questions about what creeps you out more and it doesn’t really seem to influence the game at all. IMO all of these masks should have been an option that you get just depending on how you made choices.
For me most of those mask designs are better. I’ve always found clowns more annoying than scary.
