It really is cool seeing the prices adjusted for inflation. Look how cheap the xbox one is compared to the others!

Would like to know where you got the numbers from though

  2. JerikTheWizard

I’d be more interested in a comparison of the prices proportional to wages, I doubt everyone got a 20% raise from 2020 to now like the PS5 did.

No Atari 2600? Or I’m blind. Or both!

edit per u/Pavlock info: “The 2600 was launched as the Atari VCS.” That’s 6th from the top right next to intellivision which was same era.

For me the problem isn’t so much the price itself, it’s are you getting enough value from upgrading your current PS5 to the new one to justify the cost. A lot of that will be subjective, but if I already have a ps5 with a disk drive, wanting me to pay $700 for another ps5 without a disk drive is asking a lot

  5. thankfullynot

My boi GameCube being all affordable as fuck.

  6. Technical_Acadia_210

I would have thought neo geo would be number one lol

  7. Disastrous_Ranger430

Gotta give Nintendo credit for their relatively good console affordability all these years.

  8. Did anyone here own a 3DO system? I remember seeing the ads, but never knew anyone who had one.
My first console was sega master system, then genesis, PS1 and N64. Then I graduated and moved out and bought a PS2. Then all PC until a few years ago when we got an Xbox, and now have a switch.

  9. People forget how much gamers got scammed 30 years ago lol. The pricing for that shit was absurd. We’re honestly in the most affordable era for gaming ever given all the free to play shit and the heavy discounts. Plus buying used hardware is much more accessible.

Wild that every one that broke the $700 point other than Sony died off as console makers

  11. One thing to remember here is PS2 and PS3 both had the bonus of also being a DVD player and Blu-ray player respectively.

This made them more attractive as gift for the whole family as many people at the time just had VHS players or DVD players respectively and streaming video was still not a thing for movies and tv until years after PS3 released, and most people saw movies at home through buying or renting. Netflix originally mailed DVDs / Blurays to your house to be mailed back before they started streaming.

Nowadays consoles are mostly just for gaming, and it’s hard to imagine them doubling as an entertainment system again with most TVs having smart functionality built-in anyway.

Perhaps some creative things could be done to sell it to the whole family again similar to what the Xbox One tried doing by advertising itself as a home entertainment system, but actually not fail this time since powerful graphics chips in game consoles could be used to upscale television and streaming services for large 4K or higher TVs since right now there’s a gap between TV res and internet / streaming capabilities.

4k tvs are somewhat affordable, but many areas don’t even offer high enough internet speeds to support 4k streaming, nor do most television or streaming service shows offer 4K resolution anyway, let alone higher res like 8k, so perhaps Game Consoles today could offer upscaled TV and Streaming apps for the next few years until streaming and internet speeds in rural areas catch up to the TV res.

  12. This is why I’m surprised when people shit on the Series S. It’s definitely the most affordable non-Nintendo new gen console I’ve ever seen. A Series S with GPU has been one of the best console purchases I’ve ever made

  13. arothmanmusic

The 3DO and Neo Geo were both pretty fucking impressive at the time.

  14. Niner-Sixer-Gator

Damn I’m old AF, I had most of those systems 🤦🏿‍♂️

  15. I love how there’s all these older systems, and then the PS3 just chilling in the top 10. Does prove what I’ve been saying for years about how overpriced it was at launch.

  16. wishbone34

    Philips CD-i should top this list. $699 in 1991 ~ $1600 now.

  17. sirachillies

Man everyone here is REALLY trying to justify Sonys price hike… Bunch of bootlickers is all I see

  18. General_Pequeno

The nintendo switch being near the bottom is incredible

  19. Professional_Tale804

They were expensive then, they are expensive now. My family sure as hell didn’t get the NES on launch year.

I know the Series S takes some heat, but it is absolutely the best value in gaming I’ve ever found, and the only purchase I’m happier with is my desktop gaming PC. I think I got my Series S for $250 USD on sale and it came with a second controller and possibly even a free game, idr. It’s so quiet, small, portable, and unobtrusive (looking at you, PS5). Instead of the PS5 Pro, maybe we should’ve gotten PlayStation’s take on a device like this.

  21. Particle_Cannon

The series S is just incredible. I don’t own one but that value for what it’s capable of is just insane.

  22. hatesnack

I made this point the other day. The PS3 was 600 bucks when it launched in 2006. 2000 fucking 6. Why are people so mad about the PS5 pro being 700 bucks 20 years later? It’s not like the other options aren’t still available. Sure, 700 bucks probably ain’t worth it, but it’s not the most expensive thing (relatively) that Sony has put out.

  23. HolyRamenEmperor

me: Hey wtf the Xbox Series S launched at $299

also me: Omg that’s right we had 20% inflation in 4 years…

Still, that’s a helluva deal, little machine can push 4k-120fps on a few titles and it’s the 3rd cheapest of all time.
