I'm not talking in terms of having cybernetic implants in your arms. From the game and game art etc, when you equip mantis blades we see that the actual blade is longer than your arm (in terms of where your hand ends) and the blade sits higher than your actual arm.

Maybe I'm overthinking at 4aem lol but when I imagine using them I can't help but think it would actually be a bit clunky? Like if you want to stab or slice someone's head off you'd need to aim lower to account for where the blades sit compared to your arm and so you're kind of swiping haphazardly.

Based on Melissa Rory's dialogue with her accurate mantis blades, I'd imagine part of the cybernetic implant has motors in your arm to help you be as accurate as you need to be but still..

Anyway this is what I get for overthinking.

Obviously a unique weapon that would take time to get used to, I do believe that the blades move with your movements in game, so swinging your arm to slash makes the blade move higher then come downwards (sorry for the weird description) into your enemy so it would be somewhat similar to throwing a punch

The best arm blade implant would be the one from Deus Ex. Adam’s blade beats the wish.com xenomorph of CP77.

  3. Sad-Table-1051

well, they are cyborgs, i doubt they feel any discomfort.

  4. Jetfaerie777

I think they would look a little less odd if they were farther up the forearm and not involving the hand

I’ve often thought about this and the game doesn’t do a good job of showing it. What I’ve come to assume (even if it’s wrong but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me) is that the blade part that comes out actually has a part in the back and front that extend out. So it’s shorter when uneqipped and can fit in your forearm.

  6. TheAlarmClockIChose

Pretty sure they work like those lightsabers that extend when you swing em, making the blade hollow. Also the splitting bits most likely come from the two bones in your forearm(radius & ulna) which is why the hands lose mobility once the blade is extended

It is titanium so no worries ;p

I think they are a kind of concealed weapon to attack target inconspicuously, e.g., when Alt Cunningham is attacked by a guy with mantis blades from behind.

Imagine having sleeves, like you either tear your clothes with them (maybe add extra serrations to cut through more easily) or your long coat disables your mantis blades altogether.

i imagine the mechanism for the mantis blades isn’t *that* complicated but is still very advanced compared to irl robotics. the blade is definitely designed to either be able to telescope or sheath itself somehow because there’s no way a fixed blade could fit, and there’s a visible hinge where the blade and the rest connect so the blade can gain more momentum and can extend your reach. since almost all chrome in cyberpunk is quite literally an extension of our body, your body probably just adapts overtime like after a surgery. i’m hoping, hell **praying** that cyberware this advanced can exist irl, either near future with the neuralink becoming more powerful or even in 2077 which would be very fitting. i’d kill for mantis blades and a sandy at least.

Imagine you get a bit too excited for a fist bump when you have gorilla fists.

Be rushing your choom to ER because you turned their hand to mist.

  12. Vicious00

Imagine having to clean all the blood and guts from this every day.

  13. ForgetfulPathfinder

I assume you wouldnt feel much of anything, just getting over phantom limb bs and then mentally processing the fact your arm can pop out blades, you’d get used to it

  14. notveryAI

The blade movements are probably under user’s total control, like having an arm extension with multiple additional joints(I mean, that’s exactly what it is). So user probably can totally control how low/high these blades hit

  15. Faceless_Deviant

The joint by th ehand seems very thin for melee and I also think that a sword or knife is better due to being more controllable with wrists/fingers.

The best feature is probably that its concealable.

  16. Cutting my arms off for blades would probably be uncomfortable, yea I’d say so

  17. Hot-Category2986

So, first: they are telescopic. And during gameplay, if you watch the animation you can see the blade tip retracts into the back half of the blade.

Second, yeah, the leverage angles are all wrong. You would need the entire arm to be artificial to have the strength to use those blades. And I suspect it’s a lot like an Axe, dependent on the weight of the blade to carry it through the target. You won’t be doing delicate surgery with them.

But hot damn are they cool. It’s sad that they are not as good as gorilla arms or katanas, because they look awesome.

  18. Ofc, that’s why historically swords were very widespread and patas were mainly just a weird indian thing

  19. Not really it would be convinient + it gives protection (psychological and phisical)

  20. Hexx-Bombastus

I was always under the assumption that Mantis blades are just the arasaka version of arm blades, and that there’s likely a lot of other varieties like Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike style blades, as well as Barakka from Mortal Combat style blades.

  21. Slow driver in the fast lane? Mantis blades wouldn’t help. Annoying person in line ahead of you? Problem solved. Trying to whip up dinner and can’t find the right knife? Probably a no due to inaccuracy. Kid won’t stop kicking my chair? Ginsu has nothing on how fast I’d filet your little brat.

    I guess I’m undecided. 😁

  22. It would for sure be weird at first, cyberpsychosis exists for a reason after all, but eventually it would feel like your body was always like that.

  23. Thiago270398

I think you can feel where the blades are, just like you can feel where your hands are, as they’re connected to your nervous system. It’s called proprioception.

  24. ganzgpp1

    a) yes, absolutely
    b) doesn’t matter, Style over Substance

  25. Error_Valkyrie

There are actually weapons that act like continuation of your arm so I don’t think it’s that bad of an idea.

  26. Critical-Range-6811

I imagine them like wolverine blades. I didn’t even know they looked like this lol

  27. TangerineVivid7656

As I understand it, the blade is actually split in more than 3 parts.

As you can see in the image the full blade looks like a Z where the bottom part is the arm (base), the mid part is the extender and is used to modify the range of the blade, and the top part is the actual blade.

Those are 3 parts, but if you look better, its obvious that the top part is made of at least 2 big segments.

The first one is directly connected to the main structure, meanwhile the second part looks like its connected to the extender part instead of the top part, I guess this is to retrieve a little bit the length of the blade to being able of stored it, or increase its range to have more combat possibilities.

  28. Honestly, for whatever reason, I’m insecure enough about my own arms. So I never give my V any arm or rarely any crazy leg modifications.

I’ll win the boxing with my own hands. 😎

It actually was something I thought was sorta funny the first time I played through the expansion ending. Having felt like I didn’t use much chrome.

  29. uploadingmalware

The game itself says the blade is telescopic, so it retracts like the hidden blades from assassin’s creed.

Also based on the attack animations in game, *and* based on how they act in Edgerunners, the mantis blades seem to me like they can be controlled as their own appendage, not just a pop-out blade
