Why are people leaving their games on pause for so long is the better question.
This isn’t while the computer is asleep. This is just alt tabbed or sitting unused. Depending on the game I do that just tab out of the fame rather that closing it. Some games keep hammering the gpu and cpu in the background though. So, close those ones.
Even better when you close the game for the night and steam thinks it’s running in the background, adding to your playtime. That’s why I couldn’t refund Battlefield 2042.
Why do you leave your game paused while your PC’s on sleep mode? That’s so weird. It’s not steam’s fault!
I mean I guess, but do you have any idea how much more difficult it would be to code Steam to look for meaningful player activity in every single game on the platform† instead of simply keeping a cumulative count of how long the *somegame.exe* process has been active?
†Well, more like update every game to pass activity info to Steam.
I think 50% of my PoE playtime is leaving the game in the background, standing in hideout waiting for trade requests.

I always feel proud of having 3000 hours in a game but i know like 60% of that is afk time xD
And then there are persona games
i have 300 more hours on tf2 than i should have because i accidentally left the game open when i left for a 2 week vacation
I have a bad habit of leaving my laptop on mid game and then leaving to do other stuff. It’s not about saving time necessarily, just me being a dumbass. Some of my play times are seriously inflated, particularly turn based games like Civilization.

My most played game is a game i only played once. I had set up a pc to operate as a pvr a long time ago, and it could play some lower end pc games off steam. So, some TNMT game with a launcher that never closed has thousands of hours played now. Because I launched it once. My kids didn’t like it. I quit the game. The launcher stayed open, and we continued using it as a pvr.
How many people worldwide actually do that?
Most people just turn off the game if they’re not going to play.

What’s wack about it? I have over 400 hours in AC Odyssey, over 200 in AC Origins, and over 200 in NiER: Automata. All of it is play time.
Steam used to correct for sleep time when you closed the game. I assume it just used the os’ sleep/wake up messages in the system log. I don’t know if it still corrects now.
Seems like a lot of work to count it only when being played. If the play time is so important then exit the game when not playing. I probably have hundreds of hours total of the game just being paused or on the title screen while I do something else

I’m struggling to see why it matters in the slightest
I’ve got a buddy on Xbox who loves to brag about the time he puts into games, but whenever I play with him he’s AFK for 60% of the time either smoking, doing something for his gf, or making food, and then he’ll fall asleep with his Xbox on in game, so he just ends up racking up insane playtime.
I remember when Starfield came out he was bragging about having 20 hours played by day two, but I was much further than him in the actual game with about 8 hours played.
This is my buddy with a game called dominions 5. He has somewhere between 20k-30k hours on it and 90% of it is idle hours. Someone once told him his opinion didn’t matter because of his low hours in game and I guess he took it personally.
I once knew a guy a few years ago and we were friends on the nintendo switch and he was literally always online, I asked him why he is always online and how someone can play that much and he said that he is too lazy turn off his switch, I deleted him after 2 weeks or something like that and he always was inside some game and never put his switch into sleep mode, never made sense to me

This is how I ended up with like 150+ hours of playtime in Infinite Wealth but my save file only says 100+.

My Balatro file is over a thousand hours because I left it on standby for a few weeks once.
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve fallen asleep mid-game and woken up to my character just idling on screen, I’d be rich. I have nearly 800 hours in BG3, I’ve only seen act 3 once, and the majority of the time was me falling asleep.
I play solo almost exclusively on Monster Hunter World and last I remember, I have around 1200 or more hours in it. Admittedly, it’s also been a hot minute since I’ve played

I wonder how much of the time I logged on World of Warcraft is just from AFKing.
It is very common for folks to AFK in this game for many reasons.
I don’t think I ever left a game running while I’m away for an extended period or even asleep. Hell not even in an MMO. I just log out and then back in when I get back.
What’s more interesting, how does steam decide the date when I last played a game. I know it’s not just running a game once.
People actually do that?
