That trope is seriously getting old. Max Payne and Solid Snake are great, but it seems like every protagonist these days is completely miserable to be there. It gets tiresome.
We need more Lo Wang types. Psychotically gleeful heroes that are narratively congruous with the gameplay. It rings truer to have a character behave in a cutscene or voice over in a manner consistent with the behavior of the player.

Solid Payne: It was another doomsday weapon, if your idea of a doomsday weapon is a giant fucking robot with more style than substance, and fewer nuclear warheads on board than the average submarine or middle aged post-Soviet arms dealer without a sense of right or wrong. Some poor engineer from some poor oblast, stolen across old borders that don’t even exist anymore, swindling an American megacorp for billions, all focused on some pet project right out of Otacon’s Saturday Anime. I’d need more cigarettes for this shit.
