Mad Games Tycoon 2 is fantastic and easily beats out other video game tycoon games like Game Dev Tycoon or Game Dev Story.

Mad game tycoon 2.
a little about it and why im hooked.
If you played game dev tycoon, and wanted something with way more depth, this is the game. The game starts in 1976 and goes through all the stages of development as you would expect, but its a lot more interesting than game dev as there are actually other companies putting games out on the market that might hurt your game’s sales if the themes or genres have become too saturated. You can also buy these companies out.
I somehow made enough money in the 70’s to produce the world’s first handheld console in the early 80s and dominated the market because of it. I was also making a killing selling my game engines off and reaping a 4% profit off of the sales.
One thing to note is this, the 1983-1993 are bad years for game development. the demand for technical is too high for you to match and thus your games scores will be pretty mediocre until motion capture is invented. Its a pretty brutal slump you have to slog through each playthrough, but a nice early challenge.

Two Point Hospital is a fantastic modern adaption of Theme Hospital – which was the GOAT for me personally

Gotta go with the OG Transport Tycoon Deluxe (OpenTTD). A classic that never gets old.
Kronnerm11
Project Hospital

Jurassic Park Evolution (1 or 2) is the best tycoon game I’ve ever played. It has all the best features of roller coaster tycoon, with a little spice of danger.
Part 2 adds more complexity (for better and worse)

Anything letsgameitout has played multiple times and found completely new different ways to break.

Zoo Tycoon 2 (especially modded)
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis
Jurassic World Evolution 2
Two Point Hospital
OpenRCT or RCT Classic (on mobile)
I’d love to get into Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo but I quickly get overwhelmed and the pathing system infuriates me.

Anything from Kairosoft if you want a break from the big AAA titles or are pinching pennies.

Planet coaster was way too complicated for me.. I also played on console and using a controller was a pain

To piggyback off of this, if anyone knows… What games like these have very good controller support??
Been looking to put a few on the steam deck for the kids, and we play with Xbox controllers on the tv.

Would thrillville be on this list 😂

I want to go ahead and throw out Prehistoric Kingdom. It’s in Early Access rn and it will be for probably another year or so, but it’s made a lot of progress and is already in a fairly good spot right now.
It’s a zoo based tycoon game with a focus on prehistoric animals. Dinosaurs, ice age animals, and everything in-between. The tools to build your zoo are quite refined and there’s a lot of room to do really cool builds like the Frontier games, with some QoL that Planet Zoo doesn’t have. Plus dinosaurs.

rollercoaster Tycoon and transport tycoon or their open source counterparts OpenRCT and OpenTTD

Chris Sawyers Locomotion is an absolute classic IMO, great and fun game with a TON of mod support (or at least there was 10 years ago), have hundreds of hours on steam in it just building big rail systems and such. Great soundtrack too
