I know some people think a remaster is unnecessary, and on some level they might be right, but I never played the original so this’ll give me an excuse to give it a shot.

Yeah they completely remade the game that’s why it looks so good.
Think of it this way, you can put as many fancy new textures on a character model as you want (remastering) but if the underlying model doesn’t have the polygons to correctly display that texture its pointless. At some point you just have to make a new model which is what they have done here.
