I got this ancient GPU from a friend, and Im building a budget build for my boyfriend. Should i throw this in there (i3-9100, 16gb of DDR4) or just tell him to go buy a used radeon rx 6600? He doesnt play very intensive titles, probably the most being fortnite, any intensive titles he plays on his PS5. Though he does enjoy playing RDR2 and similar games from time to time.

That won’t run modern games anywhere close to an RX6600. That said, it’s still a huge improvement over the integrated graphics. Throw it in until you have something better to replace it.
RX6600 is about 2-3X faster than that.
Eat it (optional)
It’s old, but actually falls within the recommended requirements for fortnite! You’d be able to play lighter games and games from the last generation pretty nicely. I’d throw it in for now.

Gta 4 running great on that gpu and many other games, that time where fps was nothing but a game was a game with great story’s in the games

Rx 6600 is much better. You can get a used one for less than 200$

Use it until you can get something better. It’ll certainly be faster than the iGPU.
Esd bag, safe place, cpu testing for fresh builds. Or give it away.

I wouldn’t use that GPU or the 6600 for that i3. One’s too old and the other is too overpowered. I’d settle for a GTX1650 or something.
It could work for emulation
I use my 6970 as a desk ornament//paper weight lol
It’s very roughly the same “power” as a GTX-760ti. You could certainly use it (please install it until you have other options), but don’t expect any modern games to function, or similar miracles.
PS. This is one card I’d look to see if I could remove the fairing of (highly unlikely in this case because of the air channeling. Gross idea of “modern”.

I’m fortunate enough to upgrade most of my hardware every 3 years or so.
Sometimes i give to a coworker’s gamer kid, a guy who knows a guy, or if it’s really good stuff, i give to a less fortunate friend.
Wait for a 7950 to come out and then try and pawn it off as an upgrade from even that. Afterwards, burn in hell for all eternity

Gave my 2700x and 1060 6GB away. Not much you can do with older tech because the shipping and headache of hagglers isn’t worth the seller’s time in most situations.
7970 is about on par with the gtx 1050, it’s not going to play the latest titles but it will handle most games pre 2020 and most of your E sport titles no problem especially with FSR, you could sell it second hand for like $20 or hold onto it and make it into a htpc or something for your living room
Use it as a passthrough for a nice CRT.
I *think* that’s one of the cards that works with crtemudriver, so build yourself an emulation station with batocera as the OS, buy a CRT, and enjoy nostalgia
I had this exact card. It should still do well in many games at 1080p.
Build an awesome XP gaming machine. It will also run a ton of modern boomer shooters and indie games. That’s decades of fun right there.

It’s summer atm I would use it as a bedside table fan.
I’d keep it as a backup as many have said. Or keep it for a build I’m selling or testing. Can never have too many gpus
It’s performance would be similar to a GTX 1050 Ti (But consumes a lot more power) so it’s decent enough to run indies/e-sports and some old Triple A’s at an acceptable performance.
You could use it for a while and them upgrade to an RX 580 or even a GTX 1070/1660 Super, a RX 6600 is kinda overkill for an i3 9100 but if you can’t find the other alternatives for very cheap it’s a good choice still.
That’s a 250 watt GPU. You should probably send it to recycling. It’s going to burn money so might as well get a 6600.
